The ANU Climate Change supplementary scholarship program seeks to encourage excellence in climate change research at ANU through supporting and encouraging outstanding PhD scholars to undertake cross-disciplinary and cross-college research.

Australian National University

Climate change is a challenge which transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. Identifying and implementing successful mitigation and adaptation strategies, therefore, requires a perspective which can integrate insights across domains such as the biophysical sciences, social sciences and psychology, policy and governance, and technological change.

To encourage this integrative approach to climate change solutions, the ANU Climate Change Institute is offering top-up scholarship support to promising PhD Scholars whose projects cross at least two distinct domains of research, and who have a supervisory team comprising of at least two ANU Schools or Colleges.

Field of study
Climate Change

Eligibility
We encourage ANU academics to develop PhD projects and recruit outstanding PhD Scholars with suitability for this supplementary scholarship. A limited number of supplementary scholarships are available.

    Postdoctoral Position in Social Science Perspectives on Climate Change in South Korea, University of Bayreuth, Germany

    Postdoctoral Position in Social Science Perspectives on Climate Change in South Korea

    The Department of Population and Social Geography, University of Bayreuth, Germany invites applicants for a one-year Postdoc appointment, beginning in June 2011 (negotiable). The successful candidate will undertake original research in South Korea from a qualitative social science perspective in cooperation with a currently ongoing PhD thesis project on climate change adaptation.

    This position is part of an interdisciplinary project (TERRECO) that ties together research activities in plant ecology, biodiversity, soil science, hydrology and social science which will be the domain of research. TERRECO (Complex Terrain and Ecological Heterogenity) started in 2009 as a German- Korean research cooperation including Gangwon National University, Seoul National University, Yonsei University and other major research institutes in South Korea. All research activities are conducted in South Korea with a particular interest for Gangwon Province. By filling this vacancy, we aim to intensify the social science component of this interdisciplinary project.

    Therefore, the focus of investigation should concentrate on theory driven questions that are on target for political discourses and practices labeled under the frame of climate change from a constructivist research perspective. The aim is to critically examine the relations of power and their implications for the governance of climate change. Explicit topics could be the negotiation processes of environmental law in relation to climate change, the role of ministries for the processes of adaptation and mitigation, or the recently implemented `Green Growth` strategy with a local case study area in Gangwon Province. We expect the empirical examination by qualitative social science methods like participant observation, interpretative text analysis, (expert) interviews and other ethnographic methods.

    Qualifications
    The department invites Postdoc applicants with a research background in human geography, political science, sociology and/or ethnography and possibly with an interest in critical theory. Moreover, both experience of the above mentioned qualitative methods and a good command of Korean and English are required. The empirical research will be conducted in South Korea, but some time will also have to be spent in Bayreuth, Germany, in order to participate in interdisciplinary meetings and workshops.

    The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Scholarships, Switzerland

    The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Scholarship Programme is targeting the most vulnerable regions of the world where the IPCC has identified gaps in knowledge in terms of climate change science and impacts. These comprise developing countries, and in particular Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States.

    Therefore applications coming from scholars from these areas and addressing issues relevant to them will be given priority. The Scholarship provides for living expenses, and in some cases, for tuition fees as well.

    Objective
    The Programme aims at developing the knowledge, skills and capacity of the scholars in order to address climate change impacts and sustainable development. Priorities include research on the impacts of climate change in the most vulnerable regions of the world and the potential for adaptation, mitigation and sustainable development.

    Primary goals are:

    • To create opportunities for young people from the most vulnerable regions to develop their knowledge, skills and capacity in order to address climate change impacts and sustainable development.
    • To fill gaps in knowledge in priority regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa, Small Island Developing States, and Asian mega-deltas.
    • To build capacity for adaptation and mitigation
    • To help facilitate their ability to plan for situation-specific solutions in key focus areas:
    1. Agriculture and food security
    2. Transport and human settlements
    3. Energy and water resources
    4. Extreme events and natural disasters

    United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Fellowship

    The objective of the fellowship programme is to contribute to building capacity for addressing climate change in non-Annex I Parties, in particular small island developing States (SIDS) and least developed countries (LDCs) Parties, through the development of local professional expertise by:

    • Supporting innovative analytical work on climate change in the context of sustainable development;
    • Promoting a network of experts who can bring creative and innovative options to bear on questions of climate change;
    • Encouraging the leadership potential of young and promising professionals in their fields.

    The programme target group consists of mid-career professionals who are already in a government’s employment and who are nationals of and working in a developing country, particularly a SIDS and LDC Party. While fellowships are awarded to individuals, the need for training must occur within the context of the institution for which an applicant works. The training must help the institution to develop its capacity. This means that the applicants must:

    • Obtain permission from their employer for leave of absence for the term of the fellowship, and provide written certification that s/he will return to the Party’s governmental institution addressing climate change after her/his fellowship for at least six month;
    • Get a written certification from their employer that the subject of the proposed training is relevant to the needs of the organization.
