Einhorn Oestreicher MPhil Scholarship, University of Sussex, UK

The Einhorn Oestreicher MPhil Scholarship is kindly funded through the generous philanthropic support of Prof Barbara Einhorn and The Reverend Dr Paul Oestreicher in memory of their children Jessica and Daniel, and matched funding from the University.

University of Sussex, UK

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with the unique holdings of the Archive of Resistance Testimony held at The Keep archive, Falmer. Its collections relate to the broad history of resistance, covering wartime occupied Europe, anti-Apartheid and anti-colonial struggles, and dissent in Eastern Europe during the Cold War. In the first year, the candidate will audit bespoke modules on resistance studies offered as part of the BA History and MA Contemporary History degrees. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work closely with archivists at The Keep in the further development of the Archive, in particular within the digital field.

The scholarship will be paid in two instalments of £5,000 in October 2017 and October 2018. In the first instance the scholarship will be a fee waiver, with any remaining funds to be paid as maintenance/stipend. At the end of the scholarship, holders will be eligible to apply to upgrade their registration to a PhD for a further two years of full-time study (or equivalent), and will be eligible at this point to apply to external sources of funding to support their continued studies.

The competition for these awards will be decided on the basis of academic merit, with the results announced in Spring 2017.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil) Scholarships in Neuroscience, University of Queensland, Australia

Established in 2003, the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) is housed on the St Lucia campus of UQ. It is home to more than 400 staff, including 33 group leaders, working across a range of disciplines, focussed on discovering the fundamental mechanisms that regulate brain development and function in health and disease. QBI has state-of-the-art core facilities for super resolution microscopy, flow cytometry, molecular genetics, histochemistry and cognitive testing.

Over the past decade QBI has positioned itself as one of the world’s leading neuroscience research institutes. It played a key role in contributing to UQ attaining the highest possible score of 5 for neuroscience, in both the 2010 and 2012 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) reviews, one of only two universities in Australia to achieve this.

The role
The University of Queensland is offering a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in neuroscience through the Queensland Brain Institute. The aim of the program is to offer talented students from diverse backgrounds an alternative route into a research career in the neurosciences through provision of a solid base in a broad range of neuroscience disciplines. Students will work on independent research projects under the supervision of world-leading QBI Neuroscientists, as well as undertake neuroscience-related workshops and journal clubs.
