Anniversary PhD Scholarships, University of Reading, UK

The University-wide Graduate School was established in the Autumn of 2011. In celebration of our 5th Anniversary, we are delighted to announce ten PhD studentships available for October 2017 start. These are available for highly qualified applicants for research within science, life sciences and arts, humanities and social science.

What is available?
Ten studentships, each one offering:

  • a subsistence grant (stipend) of £10,000 per annum
  • tuition fees at the Home/EU rate*
  • a £1,000 per annum training and development allowance

Awards are for up to three years in duration.

*International fee-payers can be considered for these awards but will need to be prepared to fund the difference between the Home/EU and International fee rates themselves. For more information on the amounts, please see our fees page.

Research themes
Applicants to these scholarships will need to ensure that their proposed research fits within one or more of the University’s research themes. This is one of the criteria (see below) for these awards.

Please note that these themes are intended to be broadly interpreted across subject areas.

Eligibility
These awards are open to both Home/EU candidates and International candidates.

International candidates should please note that they will need to fund the difference between Home/EU and International fees.

Criteria for selection:

  • Excellence of prospective student (academic qualifications, relevant experience)
  • Quality of the outline research proposal
  • Fit to one or more research themes
  • Strong supervisory arrangements proposed by School

Deadline
The deadline for student applications is 1 February 2017.

How to Apply

  1. As a first step, you will need to submit an application for admission to a PhD in your chosen subject via our online admissions portal. The application must be for admission in the Autumn term 2017 (normally September / October).
  2. In the ‘Scholarships applied for’ box which appears within the Funding Section of your online application, you must quote ‘Anniversary PhD Scholarships’ in order for your application to be considered in this competition.
  3. Upload a summary of your proposed research and any relevant skills or experience. Your research proposal should indicate which of the research themes listed above it relates to, justifying the fit of the research to this theme. The research proposal should be a maximum length of 500 words excluding references and should be clearly written for non-specialist readers. The research proposal is an important element of the funding decision; you may wish to consult the Graduate School’s guidance on writing a research proposal and/or your proposed supervisor.
  4. Once stages 1-3 are complete, in order for your application to be considered in this competition, you must complete the web form before the stated deadline by to register your application for the competition. Please note that you may wish to use the summary research proposal requested below (maximum 500 words) as the basis for any research proposal required for admission by your School.

Results
Successful candidates will be notified via a formal studentship award letter by the end of April 2017. Please note that this is provided separately from any Offer of Admission and will be subject to standard checks for eligibility and other criteria.

We regret that, due to the very high volume of applications, we cannot undertake to contact all unsuccessful candidates; if you have not received a formal studentship funding offer by the end of April 2017, this will indicate that you have not been successful in this competition.

Where a candidate is successful in being awarded funding, this will be confirmed via a formal studentship award letter which is provided separately from any Offer of Admission and will be subject to standard checks for eligibility and other criteria.
