The scholarship is offered as a three year PhD studentship for a full time student undertaking a PhD in Business Innovation focussed on research into the Future of Work and starting their studies in 2018/19. This studentship is available to someone with a very strong academic background and research focus in a discipline area from one of the Newcastle University Business School Subject Groups. Passion and capability for interdisciplinary research is also required.
Robots (from now on, to include AI) will lead to short term disruption but will also pave the way to a golden future. But most other technological revolutions have shifted the balance between the skilled and semi-skilled and this is likely to happen with robots. So, whilst on aggregate there may be no problem, some will lose and others gain. Thus two research issues emerge; either:
Robots will increase inequality, but not unemployment;
Robots will increase inequality AND unemployment

The David Goldman PhD Scholarships are gifted to the University by the Goldman family.
Applicants should have a good Honours degree (first-class or upper-second-class Honours) in an area related to the proposed field of study. Additionally, you must already possess, or expect to receive by autumn 2018, a Master’s-level qualification, preferably at ‘‘distinction’ level in a relevant subject area.
The award is available to UK/EU and non-EU international candidates. If English is not your first language, you must have IELTS 7.0 (with minimum of 6.5 in the writing, and a 6.0 in all other sub-skills).
International students will have to pay a top up in fees between the home rate and the international rate.
The holder of the studentship may also have the opportunity to undertake a small amount of teaching within the school. Payment for this will be at a standard hourly rate in addition to the annual studentship.
Value of award
The Scholarship will cover PhD fees at the Home/EU rate and a level of subsistence equal to that provided by ESRC scholarships (estimated rate of £14,777 in 2018/19).

You must complete the University’s postgraduate application form, selecting ‘PhD Newcastle University Business School (full time)’ as the programme of study and inserting the reference GOLDMAN18 under Further Information. You should also add this reference to your personal statement or research proposal. All mandatory fields should be completed and submitted alongside a full and detailed C.V., an outline research proposal of around 1,000 – 2,000 words and a personal statement of around 500 words which sets out your reasons for applying.
