Dr Thelma Bessell-Browne Undergraduate Scholarship, Edith Cowan University, Australia

The Dr Thelma Bessell-Brown Scholarship was established in honour of Dr Leo Leriche’s late wife Dr Thelma Bessell-Browne. Thelma was a teacher who dedicated her whole life to education, with a strong focus on reading and literacy in particular. The Dr Thelma Bessell-Browne Scholarship will be awarded to a student studying 4th Year in an Undergraduate Education degree in 2011 and who demonstrates a passion for education and a specific interest in reading and literacy.

Applicant Information:
Applicants must supply a written statement of 200 words indicating their commitment to the effective teaching of reading and literacy. In particular applicants should refer to any relevant activities they have undertaken, outside of their core units, in order to support their knowledge and understanding of effective literacy teaching.

Selection:
Selection will be based on academic merit and statement of commitment.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Students enrolling in their 4th Year at ECU in either
    • Bachelor of Education (Primary) or
    • Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Studies) or
    • Bachelor of Education (Kindergarten through Primary)
  • having completed one of the following unit structures (or equivalent);
  • CPC2101 and CPC2103; or LAN 2101 and LAN3201
