H.E. Dr Issa Ghanim Jassim Al-Kawari Scholarship, SOAS, University of London, UK

SOAS University of London UKWe are pleased to announce the availability of one H.E. Dr Issa Ghanim Jassim Al-Kawari Scholarship for UK/EU and Overseas students to enable them to undertake a range of full-time Taught Masters programmes at SOAS, focusing on the study of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

The total value of the scholarship is £25,000. Fees will be deducted from this amount and the remainder can be used toward maintenance.

Students offered a scholarship must take it up in 2019/20. It cannot be carried forward to a later year.

The programme aims to encourage diversity and in particular seeks to strike a gender balance in recipients of award.

Eligible Programmes

  • Full-time MA Arabic Literature with a focus on the literature of the GCC region (School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics)
  • Full-time MA History of Art and Architecture of the Islamic Middle East with a focus on the art of the GCC region (School of Arts)
  • Full-time MA Islamic Intellectual History (previously MA Islamic Societies and Culture) with a focus on the GCC region (School of History, Religions and Philosophies)
  • Full-time MA Islamic Studies with a focus on the GCC region (School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics)
  • Full-time MSc Middle East Politics with a focus on the politics of the GCC region (Department of Politics and International Studies)
  • Full-time MA Near and Middle Eastern Studies with a focus on the GCC region (School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics)
  • Part-time programmes are not eligible

Candidate Criteria

  • Applicants must possess a First Class Honours degree, from a UK institution or overseas equivalent.
  • Applicants must have provided evidence in their scholarship statement of:
  1. Their motivation and commitment to their chosen programme;
  2. Their leadership potential and demonstrated engagement in their community and the world beyond;
  3. Why they would be unable to fund their studies without this scholarship
  • Applicants must have an offer of admission to pursue one of the eligible full-time programmes at SOAS by the scholarship application deadline.
  • Applicants must meet the English language condition of their offer of admission to study at SOAS as soon as possible but no later than 1 June 2019. If your offer is conditional on English, please arrange your English test and ensure you meet the English requirements as soon as possible.
  • Open to UK/EU and Overseas applicants
  • The scholarship cannot be held along with any other major scholarship or studentship.

Candidate Assessment
Candidates will be assessed:

  • By a Selection Panel comprising of at least 3 academic members of staff.
  • On academic merit and promise. The statement of financial need will also be taken into consideration.
  • On candidate’s motivation and commitment to their chosen programme.
  • On candidate’s leadership potential and demonstrated engagement in his/her community and the world beyond.

The assessment of your application will be based on the information in your scholarship application and in your on-line application for admission. Selectors will be looking at the degree results and also at academic references, statements and other relevant information.

Scholarship Application Deadline

  • Scholarship applications must be received no later than 16:00 (UK local time) on 20 February 2019.
  • In order to be considered for this scholarship, you must ALSO submit a complete online application to your programme. It is recommended to apply for the programme about six weeks BEFORE the scholarship deadline (that is, by 9 January 2019). Please note that complete applications for admission can take up to 4 weeks to be considered by the Department, although this duration can vary depending on the time of year. You should be prepared to wait up to 6 weeks in busy periods.
  • Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Scholarship Application Procedures
There is a two-step procedure:

STEP 1: Apply for your programme

You must submit a COMPLETE on-line application for admission.

Applicants must have an offer of admission to pursue one of the eligible full-time programmes at SOAS by the scholarship application deadline. A complete application for admission includes transcripts, an explanation of the grading system for any degrees obtained outside of the UK, two references, CV and a personal statement. The panel will be considering your scholarship application TOGETHER with your on-line application for admission. Please note that complete applications for admission can take up to 4 weeks to be considered by the Department, although this duration can vary depending on the time of the year. You should be prepared to wait up to 6 weeks in busy periods.

It is recommended to apply for the programme about six weeks BEFORE the scholarship deadline (that is, by 9 January 2019).

STEP 2: Apply for the scholarship by 16:00 (UK local time) on 20 February 2019.

You must apply for this scholarship via the on-line application form which opens HERE on the 23rd January 2019.

Notification
Successful candidates will be notified by end-June. If you have not heard from us by end-June, you should assume that your application was unsuccessful.
