Project brief
In response to the global climate change challenge, the UK government has committed to achieve at least 80% reduction in Greenhouse Gas (GHGs) emissions by 2050 against the 1990 baseline. The recent Committee on Climate Change report advises the UK government must immediately set a legally binding target to cut GHGs to zero by 2050. The transport sector remains one of the major sources of CO2 emissions, and the energy consumption in transport creates a problem of energy dependency as it relies to a large extent on petroleum. Hence, a significant uptake on alternative energy (e.g., drop-in renewable fuels, hydrogen fuels, battery) is critical to decarbonize the transport sector.
This PhD project aims to identify the most effective strategies for achieving net-zero emissions to transition the UK to a low carbon economy. We are looking for a creative and highly motivated student to carry out the following tasks among others:
- A comprehensive review of existing low carbon technologies (e.g., biofuels, renewable fuels of non-biological origin; hydrogen fuels; battery);
- Conducting quantitative analyses such as industry analysis, stakeholder analysis, market analysis and productivity analysis;
- Identifying and engaging with relevant stakeholders through different channels such as focus group discussions, questionnaires, and interviewing key stakeholder representatives;
- Gathering general public’s views and opinions towards low carbon technologies;
- Performing empirical analyses using appropriate methodologies such as a multi-stakeholder, multi-criteria decision-making analysis-based approach;
- Providing useful insights on how transport policy can be shaped to stimulate development and investment in the UK.
Essential criteria: The successful candidate will hold a good postgraduate/degree in Energy Economics, Energy Policy, Finance, Business Analytics or similar discipline.
Desirable criteria: The candidate with excellent economics, analytical and communication skills is highly desirable; programming experience in Matlab, R and Stata are also desirable; experience in research related stakeholder engagement and development especially in bio-energy, energy or energy systems would be advantageous; professional experience of energy policy and strategy and demonstrable analytical writing experience would also be advantageous.
Informal enquiries can be made to Dr. Bing Xu: b.xu@hw.ac.uk, or 0131-451-3294.
Deadline: All applications must be submitted by 24 June 2019.
Entry requirements
All applications will be reviewed within the relevant departments with a shortlisting decision made based on qualifications, the research proposal and the availability of a supervisory team. Short listed applicants must have the equivalent of a 1st class honours undergraduate degree, or a Masters degree with an average mark of 65% or higher and a dissertation mark of 65% or higher in areas such as Energy Economics, Energy Policy, Finance, Business Analytics or similar discipline.
Applicants who are unsure if their qualifications meet the minimum criteria should contact c.a.murray@hw.ac.uk. Please note that possession of the minimum qualifications does not guarantee shortlisting for interview.

Uptake of carbon for photosynthesis is also an effective method of ‘locking up’ atmospheric carbon over long timescales, and may form a vital part of our long-term strategy towards reducing atmospheric CO2 levels
