MathMods MSc Scholarships, Mathematical Modelling in Engineering, Erasmus Mundus, Europe

MathMods is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) programme in Mathematical Modelling in Engineering run by five European universities based in L’Aquila (Italy), Barcelona (Spain), Gdansk (Poland), Hamburg (Germany) and Nice (France) – in a word, The MathMods Consortium. The Consortium has recentely been enlarged with the collaboration of three associated academic institutions (in Lviv, Ukraine; in Brno, the Czech Republic; and Maryland, USA), and can count on the effective support of several companies, research institutes and non-profit organisations in different aspects of the project.

Our MSc programme is aimed at satisfying the need of experts that may be able to apply rigorous mathematical modelling and computational techniques to solve problems in all areas of engineering.

EM scholarships are awarded to the most talented applicants who will be full-time students enrolled in the MathMods MSc course, based on the ranking made by the MathMods Evaluation Committee.

Which countries are eligible?
Students from all over the world are eligible for an Erasmus Mundus scholarship provided that they fulfil the requirements stated here as well as the additional criteria pointed out at the bottom of this page.

A distinction is made by the EU Commission between Programme and Partner countries but only for the sake of differentiating parts of the scholarship amounts being awarded (see also the 12-month rule below).

Programme Countries include:

• Member States of the European Union (EU)
• Non-EU Programme Countries, i.e. Iceland, Liechtenstein, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Norway, Turkey

Partner Countries include all the other countries around the world which are not Programme countries

Windows Additional scholarships for Partner-Country students will be awarded to applicants from specific countries:

Calculation of grant
Contribution to subsistence costs (paid to the Student)

• 1,000 EUR per month for the entire duration of the MathMods study programme (24 months maximum).

Contribution to the travel and installation costs (reimbursed after the student’s arrival)

• 1,000 EUR per year per scholarship holder resident of a Programme Country for travel costs
• 2,000 EUR per year (4,000 EUR in total) for travel costs + 1,000 EUR (in total) for installation costs for scholarship holder resident of a Partner Country whose location is situated at less than 4.000 km from the coordinating institution
• 3,000 EUR per year (6,000 EUR in total) for travel costs + 1,000 EUR (in total) for installation costs for scholarship holder resident of a Partner Country whose location is situated at 4.000 km or more from the coordinating institution

When the selection is complete, students having been awarded an EM scholarship will be required to provide a residence certificate (issued in accordance with the candidate’s municipality normal registration rules) and a certificate from the candidate’s place of work, study or training issued by the employer or institution in question. Both documents must have been issued within 12 months before the submission deadline of applying for an EM scholarship.

Contribution to participation costs (paid to the Consortium)
With “participation costs” we mean any compulsory administrative/operational cost related to the participation of the student in the MathMods Programme (e.g. library, laboratory, tuition, social security and insurance costs, etc.)

• 8,000 EUR per year per Partner Country scholarship holder
• 4,000 EUR per year per Programme Country scholarship holder

• Windows: up to 14 scholarships maximum.

In addition to the criteria above and the requirements stated here, also notice that:

• No more than 3 students selected for scholarship can have the same nationality.
• A candidate can only apply to a maximum of 3 different EM joint programmes.
• Students benefiting from an EM Master’s courses scholarship cannot benefit from another Community grant while pursuing their Erasmus Mundus masters studies.
• Students who have already obtained an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degrees (EMJMD) scholarship or are former Erasmus Mundus Master/Doctoral Course scholarship holders are not eligible for an additional scholarship under the EMMC. Students benefiting from an EMMC scholarship cannot benefit from another EU grant while pursuing their EMMC studies.
• EM scholarship holders must spend at least two complete mobility periods in at least two of the MathMods consortium’s full partners and which are located in different Programme Countries. Each of these mandatory mobility periods must include a volume of study/research or equivalent (e.g. internship, thesis preparation) corresponding to at least 30 ECTS. The mandatory mobility periods cannot be replaced by virtual mobility neither can they take place in institutions outside the consortium.
• Erasmus Mundus scholarships are awarded exclusively for a full-time enrolment in one of the course editions.
• The MathMods Consortium will ensure that all candidates proposed on the main or the reserve lists fulfil the 12-month rule: Students whose nationality is one of the Erasmus+ Partner Countries and who are not residents nor have carried out their main activity (studies, training or work) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in a Programme Country are considered as Partner Country students. The five-year reference period for the 12-month rule is calculated backwards as from the submission deadline.
  The 12-month rule does not apply to Partner-country candidates who for various reasons and under various circumstances have sought refuge and received a refugee status in a Programme Country
• Students with a Partner Country nationality who do not fulfil the Partner Country criteria defined above (12-month rule) count as Programme Country students. Students with a double nationality (of a Partner and of a Programme Country) must specify the nationality under which they submit their scholarship application.

The 2017 application for our Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Course MathMods and its related Erasmus Mundus scholarships (worth up to 47,000 euros!) is now open. You have as many as three months to complete your application as the deadline is on January 22, 2017.
