Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies Scholarships (OCISS), University of Oxford, UK

The Chevening Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (OCIS) Fellowship is a collaboration between the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and OCIS. The Chevening OCIS Fellowship is aimed at mid-career academics or professionals who are dedicated to the promotion of academic activities which encourage a more informed understanding of the culture and civilisation of Islam and contemporary Muslim societies. The Chevening OCIS Abdullah Gül Fellowship is only open to applicants from Turkey.

University of Oxford

Both OCIS Fellowships offer financial support for individuals to undertake a period of independent, self-driven research at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies.

About the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies
The Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies is a Recognized Independent Centre of the University of Oxford, established in 1985 and incorporated by the Royal Charter. Its Patron is HRH The Prince of Wales.

The Centre encourages a better understanding of the culture and civilisation of Islam, and of all aspects of contemporary Muslim societies in their global context. At Oxford, it contributes to the multi-disciplinary study of the Muslim world. Beyond Oxford, its role is strengthened by strong international academic links and contacts. The Centre pursues its aims through teaching, research, and publication, attaching special importance to promoting sustained dialogue and collaboration within the global academic community.

The Centre moved in 2016 to a new purpose-built building close to the centre of Oxford, set around courtyards and gardens, and incorporating a library, auditorium, offices, teaching rooms, and a mosque. It maintains a range of programmes, including scholarships and fellowships, lectures, and seminar series, and organises regular national and international conferences.

The Centre has many years of experience, through its scholarship and fellowship programmes, of hosting visiting scholars and assisting them in making the most of all that the wider academic life of Oxford has to offer.

About the fellowship programme
Fellows will undertake a period of self-directed research focussing on their own project on the culture and civilisation of Islam and contemporary Muslim societies in a global context.

Fellows will benefit from meeting a multi-disciplinary group of scholars focusing on the Islamic world, and have the opportunity to develop contacts with relevant individuals, discuss issues relating to the Islamic world, including Islamic history, classical Islamic sciences, economics and Islamic finance, and the study of Muslims in the West. Fellows will contribute to the Centre’s objective to encourage and promote sustained dialogue and collaboration within the global academic community of the culture and civilisation of Islam and contemporary Muslim societies.

OCIS is a Recognized Independent Centre for the University of Oxford, and provides a meeting point for the Western and Islamic worlds of learning.

The fellowship starts in October 2019 for a six-month period of independent, self-driven research at OCIS. Fellows will need to develop their own research-project to focus on during their fellowship prior to arriving in the UK.

What does this fellowship include?

  • Six-month period of research at OCIS
  • Living expenses for the duration of the fellowship
  • Return economy airfare from their home country to the UK
  • Allowance package for research-related activities

Applicants who have previously received financial benefit from an HMG funded scholarship or fellowship are eligible to apply after a period of five years following the completion of their first HMG funded award and are required to demonstrate their career progression from that point.

How to apply
Applications for both the Chevening OCIS and Chevening OCIS Abdullah Gül Fellowships are open between 6 August and 6 November 2018. If you are conditionally selected, please familiarise yourself with the placement timeline.

Only applicants from Turkey can apply for the Chevening OCIS Abdullah Gül Fellowship.
