Expected work: At FEMTO-ST, we are developing both new mathematical tools and a software dedicated to this new field of Arrays of Microsystems described hereafter. During the thesis, we aim at deriving general multi-scale multi-physical models able to cover large classes of these systems. The multi-scale mathematical methods will be rooted in recently developed techniques, as homogenization in strongly heterogeneous media for dynamical problems, our new wave two-scale convergence and two-scale convergence in periodic electrical networks. Part of mathematical modeling will be done in collaboration with the Laboratory of Mathematics at Besançon.
Arrays of Microsystems: Micro-fabrication techniques yield a large variety of devices used as sensors, as actuators or even as complete systems including sensors/actuators/control processing. In an increasing number of applications, there is an interest in designing networks of micro-systems (in a same chip) instead of single ones. They are made of a repetition of a same unit or of a parameterized unit.

Geological realism in reservoir models: uncertain data integration
A PhD studentship is available in the Institute of Petroleum Engineering at Heriot-Watt University, to work on an industry funded Uncertainty Quantification project.
Improvement of geological realism in reservoir models is one of the ultimate goals in assessing uncertainty of production predictions. One of the ways to characterize realistic geology is to describe model components and relations in a form of prior distributions, which are based on relevant geological knowledge and data. For instance, a relation between curvature and widths for fluvial channels is supported by observation of contemporary river systems.
The PhD work will be focused on integration of geo-data from different fields – geology, hydrology, paleo-geology, geography – into sub-surface reservoir models. More efficient use of relevant data as informative priors aims to improve realism and prediction capability of the petroleum reservoir forecasting model. Uncertain forecast can be improved by using realistic quantification of model unknowns described by statistical priors, elicited from geological prior knowledge. Use of informative prior distribution in prediction modelling requires self-consistent description of complex dependencies hidden in data, which are subject to vast uncertainties and usually cannot be well represented analytically.

Kinase proteins are intimately involved in cell signalling, and in many cases mutations to these proteins are involved in the development of cancers. A number of small-molecule drugs have been developed to target these proteins, most notably gleevec, which binds to the BCR-ABL kinase and is used as a treatment for chronic myelogenous leukemia, and iressa, which binds to the epidermal growth factor receptor’s (EGFR) tyrosine kinase domain and is used to treat non-small cell lung cancer. However, as is the case for bacteria and viruses, the tumour proteins can mutate and thereby develop resistance to these drugs. The mechanisms by which these mutations confer drug resistance are unclear, and are likely to depend on the particular mutation involved. Clearly, however, if we are able to understand these mechanisms, we are then in a position to design novel inhibitors which are unaffected by these mutations.
In this studentship, you will address the issue of how mutations of EGFR confer drug resistance to kinase inhibitors by using a range of simulation techniques, including docking and scoring, fast free energy calculations, and more accurate rigorous free energy methods. Methods to calculate the relative free energies of different protein conformations will also be used. This studentship is funded by the EPSRC and AstraZeneca (AZ), and will be supported by direct access to relevant experimental data available through AZ. The project will be supervised by Prof Jonathan Essex at the University of Southampton, together with a senior scientist from AZ. You will be joining an established research team working in the area of applying and developing computer simulation methods to biological problems.

Department of Physics of Gebze Institute of Technology (GIT, Turkey) and Spin-electronics group of Institut für Festkörperforschung (IFF) at Forschungszentrum Juelich (FZJ, Germany) are applying for joint grants for PhD students to conduct research at FZJ and GIT. PhD student(s) will conduct studies of nanomagnetic structures prospective for spintronic applications. The studies will include the preparation of various nanomagnets and probing their dynamic magnetic properties using high-frequency techniques (magnetic resonance).
Funding for 1 or 2 PhD positions may be available upon evaluation by both cooperative parties and the funding agencies of the program. The expected evaluation period is about 3-4 months. Candidates are expected to have a master degree (or to be sure in obtaining MSc before the end of July, 2009). Other requirement is that the candidate which will conduct studies in Germany has to be enrolled (or, at least, to plan an application) for PhD program at GIT (or another Turkish University) with the supervisor from GIT, or vice versa, the candidate intended to conduct studies in Turkey has to be enrolled at German University with PhD thesis supervisor at IFF.

CALL for APPLICATION 2009/2010
In 2007, the Department of Economics and the Department of Environmental Sciences of the Università Ca’ Foscari of Venice, in collaboration with the Euro-Mediterranean Center for Climate Change (CMCC), have launched a 3-year PhD Programme in Science and Management of Climate Change.
Every year, up to twelve students are enrolled in this Ph.D. programme. All lectures are given in English by internationally renowned professors.
The PhD Programme is organised into two streams:

- Climate Change Impact and Management, at the Department of Economics of the University Ca’ Foscari of Venice
