PhD scholarship at the Department of Anthropology, University of Copenhagen “The enchantment of nature”

The Department of Anthropology invites applications for one position as PhD student for a project on the enchantment of nature, starting from 1 April, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is limited to 3 years.

The position is part of the project Enchanted Ecologies in Scandinavia, funded by the Danish Research Agency, Culture and Communication. The succesful candidate is expected to conduct longterm fieldwork in Denmark, take active part in extended team collaboration (fieldwork, teaching, writing), and take up three months research stay at another European university.

Deadline for applications is 10 January 2018 at midnight. Employment is to begin on 1 April 2018.

Qualifications

  • Ethnographic fieldwork experience
  • Language skills in English and a Scandinavian language
  • Knowledge of literature relating to the anthropology of religion and/or the anthropology of the environment
  • Good interpersonal skills

Terms of employment
At the time of application, applicants must have an MA degree in anthropology or a closely related discipline from a Danish or international university.

In order to be eligible for a scholarship in the 5+3 PhD study program the applicant must have completed a two year MSc degree program, or have earned 120 ECTS credits at an equivalent academic level.

PhD students are paid a salary in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The PhD student has a work obligation of up to 840 hours over the 3 year period of time without additional pay. The work obligation can include for instance teaching.

  • a reserarch proposal (must not exceed 3 pages, app. 8,000 keystrokes) including foot notes, but excluding the literature list
  • a time plan (study plan)
  • a budget
  • a detailed CV (covering both academic and practical work experience)
  • documentation of academic degrees and grades
  • a list of publications (if any), and up to three names of references.

Publications and letters of recommendation should not be submitted. Applicants should carefully read the general information about the terms of being a PhD student in the department, and in particular they are strongly advised to follow the overall guidelines for PhD proposals to the Department, not least in terms of the presentation of methods and the practical feasibility of the study proposed for this position.

After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointments Committee. All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment by an expert assessment committee.

The following criteria are used when shortlisting candidates for assessment:

  1. Research qualifications as reflected in the project proposal.
  2. Quality and feasibility of the project.
  3. Qualifications and knowledge in relevant anthropology disciplines.
  4. Performance (grades obtained) in graduate and post-graduate studies.
  5. Department of Anthropology can offer adequate supervision for the research topic in question.
