PhD Studentship in Electrical Engineering, Cardiff University, UK

Project title: Rapid Identification of Broadband and Efficient PA Modes

This is a fully-funded research project, which provides an exciting opportunity in the area of RF (radio frequency) and HF (high frequency) power amplifier design with very strong multinational industry collaborations.

Cardiff University Cathays Park Campus UK

Futurewei Technologies (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Huawei North America) and Cardiff University will cooperate on the investigation of broadband and efficient PA Modes. The main goal of this project is to gain an understanding of the theoretical device/transistor limitations at RF/HF when it comes to the bandwidth/frequency tradeoffs as an enabler for future wireless communication systems (e.g. 5G to be introduced around 2020).

The collaboration will also include National Instruments utilising their hardware and software solutions. The resulting RF nonlinear measurement and modelling demonstrator will allow shorter characterisation/investigation times of RF devices (transistors) and RF PA (power amplifiers) by up several orders of magnitude.

Supervisors: Prof J Benedikt & Prof P Tasker

Start date: 1 October 2016

Funding
The award will cover tuition fees (at either the home of overseas rate) plus an annual stipend equivalent to current UK Research Council rates (£14,057 p.a. for 2015/16, updated each year).
