The Bursary: Funding is available for two UK/EU and International* students at Home/EU rates for three years full-time study. The Bursary includes tuition waiver for PhD at UK/EU fees and stipend at £16,553.
Your research study will be supervised by leading international scholars in one of the following:
Project areas:
Accounting: (Contact Professors Elaine Harris and Cristiano Busco)
- Accountability and governance in organisations, including enterprise risk management
- Accounting for strategic planning, decision-making and control: balancing financial and strategic business performance considerations
(Applicants with access to managers in organisations for case studies will be an advantage)
Economics and Finance (Contact Professors Stephen Drinkwater and Wilson Ng)
- The consequences of Brexit for business and the economy: Topics could be related to specific organisations/sectors or have a broader focus.
- Current topics in managing technology innovation, for example, in blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies, and in funding technologies through crowdfunding and ICOs.
- Challenge-based entrepreneurship and new venture creation, for example, disabled and ethnic minority/immigrant ventures, and women-led start-ups.
Marketing and Supply Chain Management (Contact Professors Mohammed Rafiq, Lia Zarantonello and Wantao Yu)
- Big data analytics and supply chain sustainability
- Using social media to build customer loyalty in retailing/ retail services
- Brand experience and emotions and brand performance
People, Organisations and Strategy (Contact Professors Carole Elliott, Maria Daskalaki and Dr Cecile Guillaume)
- Gender and careers in crisis economics
- Constructing gendered representations of women leaders and professionals in the media
- Social and Solidarity Economy (e.g. social enterprises, workers’ cooperatives, civil society organizations, community organizations and solidarity initiatives)
- HR responses to xenophobia and hate speech within the workplace
We especially welcome cross-disciplinary project proposals on areas such as Ethics and Entrepreneurship (new venture creation, management, and development).
Learning and Teaching Activities:
In addition to the research project, scholarship students will contribute to the delivery of at least one taught undergraduate module per year. It will include undertaking some lectures and seminars fully supported by academic colleagues and a professional development programme.
Full time bursary students shall be available for the equivalent of 6 hours a week over 40 weeks a year to work within the Business School. Where the student undertakes teaching or teaching-related work, the time for preparation, marking, and related administration will be included in those six hours maximum per week. The hours may be deployed in blocks or regularly throughout the 40 weeks depending on duties available. Consequently, students may be expected to contribute more than 6 hours per week at certain points in the year.
Research Environment:

Applicants should hold a first class or upper second class honours undergraduate degree (or equivalent international qualification) and a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a related subject.
