School of Economics PhD Studentships, University of East Anglia, UK

At least five studentships will be available in 2018/19 to applicants who can clearly demonstrate academic excellence in any area relevant to the strategic interests the School of Economics.

There are three main schemes under which you can apply for scholarships (see below). All three have identical academic requirements – a strong research proposal in any of the School’s fields of concentration and good performance on a relevant Masters degree or equivalent. The main difference between these schemes is in the deadlines for application, but competition will be fierce and you are advised to apply as early as possible.

Additionally, exceptional candidates with an interest in behavioural economics are encouraged to apply for the PhD Scholarship offered by the Network for Integrated Behavioural Science (NIBS) in collaboration with the School of Economics and the Centre for Competition Policy.

The School of Economics is a lively, research-oriented department, committed to excellence in high quality research and teaching. The School has a strong international reputation in Behavioural Economics and in Industrial and Competition Economics, and boasts rapidly expanding research clusters in Economic TheoryApplied Econometrics and Finance, and the Economics of Conflict. Please click to access details of our Economics Research Areas.

The recent Times Higher Education World University Ranking places the School of Economics in the top 150 Departments in the World, and the results of the Research Excellence Framework (2014) rank the School of Economics 8th among Economics departments for research outputs (Times Higher Education). 91.8% of the School’s research output is scored as either “world-leading” or “internationally excellent”, compared with an average score of 77% across all other Economics departments.

Candidates should typically hold, or expect to hold, a first degree with a minimum of 2:1 and a good Master’s degree with research methods training appropriate to the discipline, with a dissertation mark of at least 65%. Candidates applying for a 1+3 studentship should hold or expect to hold a relevant undergraduate degree. Candidates who have studied outside of the UK should typically hold, or expect to hold, qualifications at an equivalent level to those mentioned above. Candidates will be interviewed, usually via telephone or Skype, as part of the selection process. EU and International applicants may be required to provide evidence of competence in the English Language.

The Studentships cover tuition fees (UK/EU rates), a tax-free maintenance grant (currently £14,553 per year), and a research training support grant. International students are welcome to apply; a small number of the studentships will be available to cover full international fees.
