Department of Civil Engineering PhD Scholarships, Curtin University, Australia

Curtin University, AustraliaCurtin currently has 2 scholarships opportunities for higher degree by research students in the area of Bio-Activate Materials reseach to study under the supervision of Dr. Abhijit Mukherjee.

Natural habitats such as anthills and corals and formations such as stalagmites and stalactites are ecofriendly and extremely durable. Diverse microbial populations harboured in the soil plays a key role in building these formations. This project proposes to study the natural formations and replicate the processes in the laboratory to develop new materials for construction. Recent metagenomics and transcriptomic techniques will be employed to analyse the microbial communities. Links between the microbes and corresponding environmental conditions that generate materials of desired mechanical properties will be established. The biochemical processes will be replicated in the laboratory and the suitability of the resulting materials for construction of human habitat will be evaluated.

PhD Studentships in Construction Engineering, University of Cambridge, UK

University of Cambridge UKTwo PhD Studentships are expected to be available to start on 1 Oct 2013 for suitably qualified candidates to conduct research leading to the award of a PhD degree in the field of Construction Engineering. The research will be conducted at the Construction Information Technology laboratory that is part of the Laing O’Rourke Centre for Construction Engineering and Technology. The project is funded by the US National Science Foundation, in conjunction with the EU FP7 Marie Curie International Research Staff Exchange Scheme and industry.

The project will explore ways to detect existing infrastructure objects in spatial and visual data for the purpose of automating the generation of as-built geometric infrastructure models. The project will address both construction engineering and computer vision issues and provides the opportunity for a 1-year fully funded visiting studies at Georgia Tech at the beginning for those applicants who wish to extend their knowledge base in computing prior to engaging in research; thus the candidates missing background in computer vision can gain it if they are prepared to travel to the US for a short period.

Master Scholarships by AUN/SEED-Net

ASEAN University Network / Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development Network (AUN/SEED-Net)
Implementation Guidelines and Application Forms for Master’s Degree Program
For the Japanese Fiscal Year 2013

Project Background
The concept of the SEED-Net evolved at the ASEAN-Japan Summit Meeting held in December 1997 and the central issue became how to upgrade higher engineering education by way of creating engineering institutions’ networks ASEAN-wide. As a result of a series of discussions and preparations between ASEAN Member Countries and Japan, the ASEAN University Network/Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development Network (AUN/SEED-Net) was established in 2001 as a sub-network of ASEAN University Network (AUN).

After two years of preparation, full-scale operation started in March 2003 for five years as the Phase 1 cooperation, which was then followed by another five year project as the Phase 2 cooperation, supported by Japanese Government through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

PhD Studentship in Fluid Mechanics, Imperial College London, UK

Imperial College London
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
PhD Studentship in Fluid Mechanics
(Wave-structure interactions)

A PhD studentship concerning the description of extreme water waves and the fluid loads arising high in the wave crest is available in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London. The project is funded by an EPSRC CASE award in collaboration with BP and covers both University fees and a full maintenance grant. The project has funding for 3.5 years and will be supervised by Professor Chris Swan.

The purpose of the project is to provide improved models of the water particle kinematics (velocities and accelerations) arising high in the crest of the most extreme waves, thereby reducing the uncertainty in the applied fluid loads. The collaborative nature of the work will allow the student to benefit from an internationally leading research environment and, at the same time, develop a close working relationship with a leading company in the offshore/marine industry. The project involves a combination of theoretical, numerical and experimental modelling.

Applicants must have a good first degree in engineering, mathematics or physics and must be either UK citizens, EU students who have studied or been employed in the UK for the past 3 years, or overseas (non-UK, non-EU) applicants who have been employed in the UK for at least the past 3 years.
