PhD Position, Behavioral Service Substitution (BOSS), Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, Netherlands

The Architecture of Information Systems (AIS) of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e) is looking for one PhD student working on Behavioral Service Substitution (BOSS).

The position is for 4 years and funded by NWO.

Service-orientation aims at composing complex systems from simpler systems, called services. One fundamental problem is to decide when a service can be substituted by another service. In this project, we approach this problem by combining theoretical research and applicability in industrial settings. To this end, we investigate a theoretical foundation of service substitution at the level of service models. Among others, we develop algorithms to decide service substitution and to construct substitutable services. We implement and integrate the theoretical results into service technology tools available at and embed it in other tools such as ProM and BPM/SOA platforms.

The project will be conducted in the AIS group under the supervision of prof.dr. Wil van der Aalst and dr. Christian Stahl. The AIS group is part of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.

The department provides undergraduate and MSc programs in Industrial and Applied Mathematics and in Computer Science. The Department has research collaborations with other Departments at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven as well as with a large number of other universities and companies, both at home and abroad. The Department has approximately 350 employees and more than 700 students.

PhD Researchers on Distributed Information Indexing and Retrieval, University of Geneva, Switzerland

The Viper group of the Department of Computer Science of the University of Geneva is seeking two PhD Researchers on Distributed Information Indexing and Retrieval

The Viper group on Multimedia Information Management (http://viper.unige.ch) is part of the Computer Vision and Multimedia Laboratory. The Viper group initially specializes on visual information management and has now extended its activities on multimedia information management. This activity includes several complementary aspects along the chain of assisted content-based information management. We address the problem of content-based search and retrieval of multimedia data in relation with modern machine learning and data mining techniques.

This is also related to our research on content characterization where we mixed automated characterization techniques and knowledge management and discovery techniques. The Viper group is now chairing the Technical Committee 12 of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR-TC12, “Multimedia and Visual Information Systems” http://www.iapr-tc12.org). It has co-organized the ACM International Conference on Image and Video Retrieval (ACM-CIVR 2009, http://www.civr2009.org) and is chairing the International Conference of the ACM-SIG on Information Retrieval in 2010 (ACM-SIGIR 2010, http://www.sigir2010.org).

Tasks
The two positions are within the Swiss National Science Fundation (SNFS) project for Large Scale Indexing and Retrieval of Multimedia Collections. The project focuses on the issues of high performance, distributed and parallel computation in the process of multi-modal information indexing and content abstraction. The first PhD topic is dedicated to distributed data processing and indexing, while the second is centered around parallel machine learning and data-mining algorithms. Post-holders will be asked to provide new specifications of a Multimedia Information Retrieval system based on a complete state of the art of their respective domain as well on as an evaluation of the most promising techniques. The integration of their work into a single prototype is planned in a second phase of the project.

Research Scholarship for Computer Science / Engineering or Math, Swinburne University of Technology, Australia

Project title:
Statistical Forecasting of Probabilistic Properties

Research topic:
Quality attributes such as performance, reliability, availability, safety, and security have a probabilistic nature, and are important for almost all software development projects and for projects related to automotive, avionic and medical systems in particular. However it is hard constructing a system that fulfils requirements regarding these quality attributes. Consequently, also quality control at the system runtime is required. Du to the probabilistic nature of these quality attributes this project aims to use statistical monitoring and forecasting techniques (e.g. time series analysis) as a novel quality control instrument for critical system components.

Your Benefits:
Basically, the benefits can be summarized as follows:

  • You will work on real-world research problems. (There will always be opportunities to cooperate with major software and systems engineering companies.)
  • You will be trained in all skills that are required to successfully finish you research project. Our goal is to help you develop the skills, connections, and opportunities required, that ensure a successful postgraduate career.
  • You will create research outputs at the highest standards. In today’s world, it is not only enough to be good, students must be great and competitive compared to other graduate students. Please have a look at our own research outputs.
  • You will get optimal and continuous supervision. My goal is to give you strong support on your research from a technical side. However, we also try to help my students to develop their personal skills. If you like to know more about my supervision style, we can provide contact details of recently graduated students as reference.
  • You study in a friendly and cooperative environment. Australia is known for its friendliness.
