Description of the scientific environment
The PhD students will be working within the Unit for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Management at the Department for Food and Resource Economics at the University of Copenhagen. The researchers in this unit engage in qualitative and quantitative research aiming at contributing to theory development within innovation, entrepreneurship and management. At the same time, they try to carry out applied research to inform specific sectors with practical insights relevant to academics, practitioners and policy makers. Their research covers a wide range of topics, such as technology management, strategic management, entrepreneurship, organization studies, decision making, value chain analysis, open innovation, business models, intellectual property management, and university-industry relations.
Project description
Two PhD positions are advertised to further develop the Unit for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Management’s research on university-industry relations. The Unit recently obtained a DKK 10 million grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation as part of their social science research program focusing on the socioeconomic impact of research in Denmark (http://novonordiskfonden.dk/en/content/three-projects-aim-create-more-knowledge-societal-impact-research). The PhD students will contribute to this project by engaging in extensive fieldwork and analysis as part of an in-depth case study of the University of Copenhagen’s Faculty of Science (SCIENCE), which is Denmark’s largest natural science research and education institution (http://www.science.ku.dk/english/about-the-faculty). There will be a large focus on inductive qualitative case study research and ethnographic methods, including interviews, observations and other primary and secondary data at different SCIENCE levels (ranging from individual to institutional). One PhD fellow will mainly focus on the general case study of SCIENCE while the other PhD fellow will specifically engage in ethnographic research of individual SCIENCE researchers. Ultimately, the research conducted in this project will lead to new theoretical insights on knowledge transmission mechanisms underlying university-industry relations, which will be published in relevant journals as well as inform relevant stakeholders in practice and policy.
