Multiple PhD Studentships: Application of Graphics and computational fabrication techniques for novel 3D printed acoustic devices (2018)

University of Sussex, UK

Multiple PhD studentships in computational fabrication and graphics are available in the Interact Lab of the University of Sussex.

Type of award
Postgraduate Research

PhD project
Multiple PhD studentships in computational fabrication and graphics are available in the Interact Lab of the University of Sussex from October 2018. The project will be supervised by Sriram Subramanian (https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=CO9UQcsAAAAJ&hl=en).

Our group is interested in exploring the use of 3D printed structures to shape and sculpt sound input sound fields. These 3D printed structures are often called metamaterials and can be used to create acoustic lenses and mirrors. Using these structures, we can create novel haptic devices, speakers and many new interactive experiences.

This project will involve using computer graphics techniques to model and analyse these structures to make structures that are efficient and effective in manipulating input sound fields. This project will give you the opportunity to collaborate in a novel field of cutting edge research in a highly applied and fast moving area. The successful candidate will engage with many ongoing research collaborators in UK, Denmark, Sweden and USA. In addition to undertaking high quality research and publishing in top graphics and HCI conferences/ journals, the group also creates significant impact by developing technology that is integrated into different industry products.

PhD Studentship in Electrical Engineering, Cardiff University, UK

Project title: Rapid Identification of Broadband and Efficient PA Modes

This is a fully-funded research project, which provides an exciting opportunity in the area of RF (radio frequency) and HF (high frequency) power amplifier design with very strong multinational industry collaborations.

Cardiff University Cathays Park Campus UK

Futurewei Technologies (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Huawei North America) and Cardiff University will cooperate on the investigation of broadband and efficient PA Modes. The main goal of this project is to gain an understanding of the theoretical device/transistor limitations at RF/HF when it comes to the bandwidth/frequency tradeoffs as an enabler for future wireless communication systems (e.g. 5G to be introduced around 2020).

The collaboration will also include National Instruments utilising their hardware and software solutions. The resulting RF nonlinear measurement and modelling demonstrator will allow shorter characterisation/investigation times of RF devices (transistors) and RF PA (power amplifiers) by up several orders of magnitude.

Supervisors: Prof J Benedikt & Prof P Tasker

Start date: 1 October 2016

Funding
The award will cover tuition fees (at either the home of overseas rate) plus an annual stipend equivalent to current UK Research Council rates (£14,057 p.a. for 2015/16, updated each year).

One studentship is available.

Master Scholarships by AUN/SEED-Net

ASEAN University Network / Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development Network (AUN/SEED-Net)
Implementation Guidelines and Application Forms for Master’s Degree Program
For the Japanese Fiscal Year 2013

Project Background
The concept of the SEED-Net evolved at the ASEAN-Japan Summit Meeting held in December 1997 and the central issue became how to upgrade higher engineering education by way of creating engineering institutions’ networks ASEAN-wide. As a result of a series of discussions and preparations between ASEAN Member Countries and Japan, the ASEAN University Network/Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development Network (AUN/SEED-Net) was established in 2001 as a sub-network of ASEAN University Network (AUN).

After two years of preparation, full-scale operation started in March 2003 for five years as the Phase 1 cooperation, which was then followed by another five year project as the Phase 2 cooperation, supported by Japanese Government through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
