PhD Research Fellowships in Energy Informatics, University of Oslo, Norway

The University of Oslo is Norway’s oldest and highest rated institution of research and education with 28 000 students and 7000 employees. Its broad range of academic disciplines and internationally esteemed research communities make UiO an important contributor to society.

The Department of Informatics (IFI) is one of nine departments belonging to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Oslo. IFI is Norway’s largest university department for general education and research in Computer Science and related topics. The Department has near 950 students on bachelor level, near 450 master students, and over 180 PhD students. The overall staff of the Department is close to 250 employees, about 200 of these are full time positions. The full time scientific staff is 60, mostly Full/Associate Professors.

PhD Research Fellowships in Energy Informatics, 2 positions
Two PhD Research fellows are available at Department of Informatics, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo, Norway. The fellowships are for a period of 3 years. Starting date preferably no later than 01.02.2018.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.

Project description:
The two research fellows will be working in the project SmartNEM (“Smart Community Neighborhood – driven by energy informatics”) funded by the Research Council of Norway. SmartNEM is a joint project with University of Stavanger, Norway. The project will employ a total of seven PhD scholars of which three will be employed by University of Oslo UiO). One of the PhD scholars supported by the SmartNEM project will be supervised in collaboration with the Faculty of Computer Sciences at the Østfold University College in Halden and the Norwegian Centre of Expertise Smart Energy Markets (NCESmart). An industrial advisory board with members including Statnett (the Norwegian TSO), Lyse Energy, DNV-GL and the NCE Smart cluster will offer industrial guidance to the PhD scholars.

The vision of the research is to exploit state-of-the-art ICT methods, tools and techniques for the future sustainable energy systems. We have particular interest in the following technologies for efficient and secure energy systems: fog computing, machine/deep learning, data analytics, blockchain and software defined principles. We will develop new models and algorithms to provide the power grid operators with intelligent energy management with privacy preservation in local regions.

Up to six scholarships are offered, including:

The purpose of the Education for Sustainable Energy Development (ESED) scholarship is to support outstanding students pursuing advanced studies in sustainable energy development and to encourage meaningful contributions to the collective body of knowledge about this subject.

The Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership considers an outstanding student to be one who:

Who is eligible?
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, students must

What are the levels of financial assistance and the duration of the scholarships?

Demonstration of Energy-Efficient Developments (DEED) Awards, American Public Power Association, USA

The Demonstration of Energy-Efficient Developments (DEED) program was established in 1980 by the American Public Power Association. The purpose of this research, development and demonstration program is to sponsor and conduct activities related to energy innovation, improving efficiencies and lowering the cost of providing energy services to the customers of publicly owned electric utilities.

The DEED program offers funding for projects that will develop and demonstrate new technologies and techniques. Funding for DEED-sponsored projects comes in the form of grants to DEED member utilities, scholarships to university students studying in energy-related disciplines, and joint projects with APPA committees as well as funding for technical design projects conducted by students.

APPA is the national service organization for community-owned, not-for-profit electric utilities.

CRITERIA FOR TECHNICAL DESIGN PROJECT AWARD:
DEED technical design projects are intended to promote the involvement of students studying in energy-related disciplines in the public power industry. Successful applicants are expected to complete a technical design project and submit a final report on the project, describing activities, cost, bibliography, achievements, problems, results, and recommendations. A two-page summary abstract is also required. In addition, the student(s) will travel to the next APPA Engineering & Operations Technical Conference to present their project to the conference.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR APPLICANTS:
Only students studying in energy-related disciplines from accredited colleges or universities are eligible for technical design project funding. Applicants will not be discriminated against on the basis of sex, race, religion, national origin, or citizenship.
