National University of Singapore (NUS) Graduate Scholarships for ASEAN Nationals

The National University of Singapore [NUS] offers 40 scholarships each year to nationals of ASEAN* member countries to take full-time course-work graduate degrees at NUS. Singapore citizens and permanent residents are ineligible. These awards, known as the NUS Graduate Scholarship for ASEAN nationals [NUS GSA], are financed by the People of Singapore and the University. The scholar has no obligation or bond to NUS or Singapore but is expected to complete the graduate degree and return to the home country.

*(ASEAN comprises the 10 nations of South East Asia – Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.)

The NUS GSA is only for full-time course-work graduate degrees** conducted at NUS and designated for the scholarship . Candidates receiving other awards will be disqualified from the NUS GSA.

**(The NUS GSA is not for Research or Doctorate [Ph.D.] programmes. The NUS Research Scholarship is available for these programmes.

Application for the NUS GSA
Application for the NUS GSA is decentralized to each NUS Faculty/ School and integrated into the application for each designated graduate degree. Therefore, the application period and due date for the designated graduate degree is applicable to the NUS GSA. There are, however, different application periods and due dates for each designated graduate degree.

Candidates should contact the Administrator of the respective NUS Faculty/School for more information. Contacts of the Administrators at the NUS Faculties/Schools are given in these web pages.

Modelling of ThermoAcoustic Instabilities
University of Cambridge – Department of Engineering

Lean premixed combustion are identified to be a potential candidate for environmentally friendly gas turbines. Because of the inherent instability issues in lean combustion, the use of partial premixing strategies is inevitable and is commonly used in industrial gas turbines to have smooth operating characteristics. The occurrence of combustion oscillations leading to thermoacoustic instabilities is also inevitable in large industrial gas turbine and these instabilities come into light at an advanced stage of new engine development programmes. Hence altering combustor design will be very expensive and these instabilities are usually controlled using sophisticated open or closed loop control strategies built based on experience. Thus, there is an attractive incentive to develop reliable methodologies and tools to predict combustion instabilities since there is a substantial economic gain in using reliable predictive tools in new engine development. This project is a first step towards this goal.

The main aim of the project is to simulate the thermoacoustic instabilities of lean premixed and partially premixed flames using the latest combustion models developed in the past few years at Cambridge University Engineering Department for turbulent premixed and partially premixed combustion. It is expected that one of the commercial CFD tools along with the CUED combustion submodels will be used to simulate turbulent combustion. These CFD results are to be analysed to obtain flame transfer functions which will be used in subsequent thermoacoustic simulations using loworder modelling methods. There is also a scope for developing a new modelling approach. These predictions are to be compared with published results on thermoacoustics and this project involves collaboration with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Japan.

The successful candidate will have a first class, at least 2:1 or equivalent, postgraduate degree in Mechanical/Aerospace/engineering or any other relevant fields. A strong background in fluid dynamics, combustion, numerical methods and good analytical skills are desirable. Application from overseas student is welcome. Funding, covering all expenses, is available for three year doctoral study in thermoacoustic instability modelling and computations at Cambridge University Engineering Department. This studentship will commence from October 2010 or as soon as possible thereafter, but it should be before January 2011

Charles W. Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction, University of Nebraska at Lincoln
Omaha, NE, United States

Architectural Engineering (AE) focuses on the design, integration and coordination of building engineering systems, including structural systems; heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems; acoustical systems; and lighting and electrical systems. The University of Nebraska AE program is part of the Charles W. Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction. It is offered on the Omaha campus in the Peter Kiewit Institute Building.

Description: Postdoc Position at University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Project: Magnetoelastic analysis of nano-structures for sensor applications
Contract: One year, extendable

Job Description
Nano-structures have opened many possibilities and opportunities to produce an entire new generation of sensor devices for acoustic, vibration, tactile, flow measurements, and etc. However, most studies of mechanical and electromagnetic properties of nano-structure were limited to experimental basis. There is a lack of modeling and design tools for the dynamic and electromagnetoelastic analysis of nano-structures.

Research Assistant Position, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium

A three year research position in a project with a clear intention to complete a PhD at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven within four years.

Title:
A system for automatic monitoring of human effectiveness on a tugboat (SAFETUG)

Project description and tasks
The port of Antwerp is the 2nd largest port in Europe and the 8th largest container port in the world. Its’ unique position in the centre of Europe along with its speed and reliability make it a popular destination for a large number of cargo ships. Of crucial importance for efficiency and safety in this process is the assistance that tugboats provide to the large cargo ships.

However, there is currently no solution available that can measure online the efficiency of the tug boat captain in performing the boat manoeuvres. In order to reduce the captain performance-related accidents, there is a big need for a system that can identify ineffectiveness of the tug boat crew and act in order to prevent accidents. It is the aim of this project to develop such continuously monitoring and early warning system. The approach will be based on image analysis and analysis of biological responses (such as Heart Rate, Skin Conductance, etc.).

The tasks of the researcher will include setting up of the experiments both in a boat simulator and a real tugboat. Data analysis and mathematical modelling in order to develop models that can be used for monitoring and prediction of the captain’s performance in terms of concentration, sleepiness and stress (human effectiveness).

3 PhD Positions, Minimally Invasive Robotics in An MRI Environment (MIRIAM), University of Twente, Netherlands

The Institute of Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine at the University of Twente, Netherlands has openings for three PhD student positions for the project MIRIAM – Minimally Invasive Robotics in An MRI Environment.

Research Project Description
Needle insertion is one of the most common minimally invasive clinical procedures. It is used for diagnosis, localized drug delivery, and tissue sample removal from tumours deep within the body. These procedures are often performed under the guidance of magnetic resonance (MR) images. For effective medical diagnoses and treatments, the needle must reach its intended target. However, tissue inhomogeneity, organ deformation, and physiological processes cause the needle to deviate from its intended path. In order to increase the targeting accuracy of needles and improve clinical outcomes, the goal of this research project is to develop:

  1. An MR-compatible robotic device (PhD: Mechanical Design – Position 1)
  2. Patient-specific biomechanical tool-tissue interaction models (PhD: Biomechanical Modeling – Position 2)
  3. Techniques to track and control needle path using MR images (PhD: Image Processing, State Estimation and Control – Position 3)
