The Excellence Scholarship & Opportunity Programme (ESOP) supports students with a scholarship, mentorship and a network of the ETH Foundation. The scholarship covers the full study and living costs during the Master’s degree course.

Application
ESOP applications are supplied via eApply (online Master application).

This also applies for ETH Bachelor students for a consecutive Master programme.

Eligibility

Very good result in Bachelor’s degree programme (top 10% of Bachelor’s degree programme = grade A)
Please make sure to be reachable under the telephone number specified in your CV as the selection process might include a phone/VC interview in February

If you are already enrolled in a Master’s degree programme at ETH Zurich, or hold a Master degree, you are not eligible for ESOP.

Sawiris Doctoral Scholarships for Students from Developing Countries, ETH Zurich, Switzerland

The Sawiris Scholarships promote doctoral research for the benefit of developing countries. The projects have to be innovative and develop a method or product, which is directly relevant for improving the livelihoods of poor people in developing countries.

Deadline for the next submission of concept notes is 31 October 2011.
Deadline for the submission of full project proposals by candidates admitted to the second stage of the selection process is 15 February of the subsequent year.

Eligibility
To be admitted to the selection process, the application has to fulfil the following requirements:

The candidate

Preference will be given to citizens of least developed countries and other low-income countries according to the OECD classification.
The entrance requirements for doctoral studies at the ETH Zurich have to be fulfilled.
Experience in the selected research area is required.

The research project

The proposal is of high scientific quality.
The research topic is innovative and relevant for development.
The ecological, socio-economic and cultural context has been taken into account.
Reasonable results can be expected in the given timeframe.
The expected impact of the research is high for the intended target group.

PhD Position on Weather Insurance Design Project at ETH Zurich, Switzerland

The Agri-food & Agri-environmental Economics Group of ETH Zurich(www.afee.ethz.ch) invites applications for a Ph.D position.

The successful candidate will implement a research project on the weather insurance design. The project will be financed by SwissNational Science Foundation and an ETHZurich internal PhD-grant. The objective of the project is to enhance the methodology of the weather insurance contract design considering conditions of limited relevance and applicability of historical data. The project will focus on the application of extremal dependence analysis and elaboration of the methodology for the utilization of a priori information available in the form of climate change projections. The project will be conducted based on historical data, climate change projections and results of crop simulation models for Kazakhstan where grain producers are especially prone to risk of drought.

The basic requirements are:

A master degree in Mathematics, Economics, Agricultural Economics;
Strong background in Probability Theory and quantitative methods;
Programming skills;
Good command of spoken and written English;As the project will be implemented in collaboration with the scientists from Russia and Kazakhstan, knowledge of Russian would be an asset but is not a prerequisite.

PhD Position (Open Source Software), ETH Zurich, Switzerland

The Chair of Systems Design, ETH Zurich, offers a position for a PhD student working in the project “On the Interplay between Social Interactions and Software Architecture in Open Source” funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF), starting as soon as possible.

This project brings together the fields of software engineering, statistical physics, and management to reap synergies between them and to advance the understanding of the complex socio-technological dynamics underlying Open Source Software, beyond the scope of one particular discipline.

The aims of this project are:

To establish a holistic picture of the phenomenon of Open Source
To understand the statistical laws governing the evolution of the software architecture, which may help developers to steer development towards favorable architectures
To study the self-organization of projects and the resulting social dynamics, on the level of both software users and developers
To analyze the link between software architecture and the project organization, as well as between the corresponding dynamics, which may enable new management principles or provide tools for smoothening the interface between software, developers, and users

Requirements:

MSc degree or equivalent in computer science or a related field
ability to develop formal models and computer simulations
ability to combine data analysis and modeling
good knowledge about graph algorithms and social network analysis is a plus
strong abilities to communicate in an interdisciplinary scientific environment
interest in becoming acquainted with methods from physics, economics, and management
