Immigration Journalism Fellowship for International Journalists, French-American Foundation

The recent global recession has brought immigration and integration issues back into the spotlight, especially in Europe and the United States. Yet, with media outlets facing drastic job and budget cuts, it has become more challenging for journalists to undertake in-depth or investigative reporting projects on immigration.

With the generous support of the Ford Foundation, the French-American Foundation is launching the Immigration Journalism Fellowship. This first of its kind Fellowship aims to provide media professionals with the financial means to produce objective and challenging material on one of the most heated and controversial contemporary issues. To that end, the French-American Foundation will award fellows up to $10,000 for their work, to be completed over a 4-6 month period.

The fellowship is open to experienced journalists of any nationality and with an interest in questions of immigration and integration. The French American Foundation will pay special attention to innovative and groundbreaking material. We are looking for visionary, uncovered and meaningful stories with the potential to advance public debate. Both creative content and format will draw our particular attention. All types of stories will be considered (local, global, cultural, economic, etc.), as long as they comply with journalism ethics of fairness and responsibility.

Eligibility Requirements:
The French-American Foundation and its Media Advisory Committee will consider Media professionals:

  • from all types of media (print, web, broadcast, documentary, etc.);
  • with a minimum of three years of professionalism journalism experience and outstanding achievements in the field;
  • of all nationalities (note that the work produced as part of the fellowship must be published in the United States or in Europe);
  • with the ability to work in either English or French (the final work must be published in English or French);
  • with a prior commitment from a media organization to publish the work produced.

Marie Curie Career Integration Grants (CIG), Europe

Many researchers currently working around the world would consider getting a stable position in a European research institution. The new Career Integration Grant scheme helps them to achieve this.

Who can apply?
CIG applicants must be experienced researchers from any country in the world, with at least 4 years’ full-time research experience or a doctoral degree. You must have been actively engaged in research, but you cannot have carried out your work in the country of your host organisation for more than twelve months over the last three years. Finally, you must not have previously benefitted from a European or an International Reintegration Grant (ERG or IRG) or from a Career Integration Grant.

What does the funding cover?
The Career Integration Grant is a flat rate contribution towards your research costs. These may, for example, contribute to the salary costs of the researcher or other staff employed for the project, travel costs, consumables, patent costs and/or publication costs. The grant will cover a period of 2 to 4 years and must be used within this period. If your grant application is successful, the European Commission will establish a grant agreement with your host organisation in Europe. The host will then provide you with an employment contract (if one does not already exist), on the basis of which it is expected to pay your salary and ensure your integration for at least the duration of the grant. Your host organisation must be a university, a research centre or an enterprise in an EU Member State or Associated Country.

Which topics can be funded?
CIG proposals are welcomed from all areas of scientific and technological research, excluding research areas covered by the EURATOM Treaty.

Manchester Business School Comparative & International Business (CIB) Studentship, UK

The rise of China, India and Brazil as economic and political ‘drivers’ of the global economy is subject to both academic research and policy deliberations (Lauder, Brown, and Brown 2008). These economies not only have managed to sustain growth despite the economic downturn but have also turned out to be drivers of economic change that challenge established wisdom of both economic performance and development. This project will look at the following issues:

  • How firms from rising powers may be disrupting the current paradigm of global competition and are thus changing the ‘rules of the game’ (Zeng and Williamson 2007).
  • Rising power firms are increasingly becoming global players, taking on more substantive roles in global production networks or becoming lead firms in their own right (Schmitz 2004). Which factors facilitate this development, how can firms upgrade their position?
  • Furthermore, rising power firms often address ‘bottom of the pyramid’ markets or engage in entrepreneurial innovation that is unprecedented and alleviates social problems (London, Anupindi, and Sheth 2010). This project seeks to identify drivers and outcomes of this economic development process.

Project title: Rising power firms and drivers of economic change
Supervisor(s): Professor Rudolf R Sinkovics, Professor Mo Yamin
Duration: 3 years full-time, commencing September 2011
