Postdoctoral Position in Molecular Genetics, University of Antwerp, Belgium

The VIB Department of Molecular Genetics at the University of Antwerp is looking for a Postdoctoral scientist in Molecular Genetics

Context:
VIB is an autonomous research institute conducting pioneering research in the life sciences. Clustered around a broad range of disciplines (molecular biology, cell biology, developmental biology, structural biology, genetics, proteomics, …), the research at VIB intends to gather innovative basic knowledge on normal, abnormal, or pathological processes occurring in an organism (humans, plants, micro-organisms) using gene technological research. Through a close partnership with the 4 Flemish Universities of Ghent, Leuven, Antwerp and Brussels, VIB unites the great expertise and broad experience of about 1200 researchers and technicians. Together with these universities and a strong backbone funding, VIB continuously invests to stimulate top research, to pursue an active technology transfer policy towards its research findings and to communicate the gathered scientific information to the broad public. (http://www.vib.be/VIB/EN/).

The VIB Department of Molecular Genetics is one of 8 research departments of VIB. With near 100 researchers working in 4 research groups, the department aims to understand the complex nature of neurological and psychiatric human diseases (http://www.molgen.ua.ac.be/). The department disposes over the expertise of centralized service facilities like the Genetic Service Facility and the Diagnostic Service Facility, as well as central units with expert knowledge in functional genomics, technology development and bio-informatics.

Postdoctoral Fellowship in Molecular Genetics, USA

This position is a two year appointment starting approximately July 1, 2010, involving both research in our molecular genetic laboratory and in situ field work focused on the biodiversity of Madagascar, including lemurs, carnivores, geckos, chameleons, boas, turtles and tortoises populations endemic to the island.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The scientist will employ molecular genetic techniques in the laboratory to generate species-specific microsatellites, multi-locus genotypes and DNA sequence files. The incumbent will also be responsible to apply advanced statistical methods, computer science skills and bioinformatics principles to highlight the dynamics of population genetics and systematics. The candidate’s ability for independent and critical thinking and excellent English writing skills will be vital in the writing of grants and publishable manuscripts. Excellent interpersonal skills will be key, especially in relation to our cross-cultural field research teams in Madagascar.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Excellent opportunity available for a motivated and experienced Ph.D. in the genetics, molecular biology, or cell biology fields, with a strong publication record and outstanding professional references. Emphasis in conservation science or informatics experience is a plus. Qualified candidates must show proficiency in molecular genetic techniques and computer skills capable to generate necessary data and to perform genotype and sequence analysis. The position will require attention to detail, good communication skills, strong skills in experimental design and troubleshooting, an ability to work independently and as part of a team, and dedication to doing the best job possible.

European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics (EM-ABG), Erasmus Mundus, Europe

The European Master in Animal Breeding and Genetics (EM-ABG) offers high quality training, both in terms of scientific knowledge and didactic skills, provided by six excellent university groups within the EU. The EM-ABG is a response to the need for highly qualified graduates in the internationally operating area of animal breeding and genetics.

Objective:
The integrated European Master of Science Course in Animal Breeding and Genetics (EM-ABG) aims to offer high quality international training, both in terms of scientific knowledge as well as in didactic skills, provided by a limited number of excellent university groups within EU.

Integrating education in a joint course offers the students a better opportunity to specialize in a certain aspect, as well as to have access to a broad range of subjects, bringing about a holistic view on the sustainable use of animal genetic resources. The course will be highly relevant for both EU and non-EU students who wish to be employed in organizations working in the field of sustainable animal breeding.

The EM-ABG aims to provide a European dimension in the knowledge-intensive area of animal breeding which is operating internationally. European animal breeding organisations are world leaders, with global market shares of up to 90%. There is an increased need for people with a MSc degree in animal breeding, but the number of graduates is currently decreasing. The EM-ABG provides a response to the need for highly qualified graduates as well as to the need to adapt education systems to the demands of the knowledge society, to enhance the attractiveness and visibility of European higher education world-wide, and to stimulate the process of convergence of degree structures across Europe. The EM-ABG aims at training students who wish to contribute to the development of sustainable farm animal breeding. Graduates will be able to find positions in and outside Europe, either in their country or in a national branch of an international breeding organisation.

Postgraduate Research Scholarships in Wildlife Genetics, University of Canberra, Australia

The University of Canberra has postgraduate scholarships available for both domestic and international students, with a closing date of October 30, 2009.

Prospective applicants will need to discuss potential projects in advance of submitting an application. See the contact below.

We are seeking postgraduate research students to work on various questions to do with sex determination in reptiles and amphibians.

Projects of interest will draw upon a combination one or more of incubation experiments and sex ratio analysis; population genetics; cross-species chromosome painting; sex chromosome gene mapping using our Pogona vitticeps BAC library; subtractive hybridization; gene expression analysis; transcriptomics; next generation sequencing and bioinformatics.

The particular combination of techniques and approaches used will depend upon the questions addressed and the interests and expertise of the candidate.
