PhD Studentship, Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick, UK

PhD Studentship, Warwick Medical School, Biomedical Cell Biology
Supporting Partner: Warwick Private Hospitals Charitable Trust

This is an outstanding opportunity for a practically-minded Physicist, Engineer or Biologist with an interest in modern digital optical microscopy to pursue a PhD qualification in optical microscope control engineering. As part of a wider programme in digital optical microscopy, we are currently developing the Warwick Open Source Microscope (WOSM, http://wosmic.org). The WOSM uses a compact optical design that is exceptionally physically stable, opening up new opportunities for ultra high resolution optical microscopy. The most innovative aspect of the WOSM is its control scheme.

The entire microscope is controlled from a web browser via a local microcontroller, allowing remote operation and allowing several microscopes to be controlled from a single web browser. The immediate opportunity is for a student to take on the work of implementing Rasberry Pi integration.

The WOSM project website will serve software, data and community-based support for both hardware and software. There are opportunities in implementing this, also.

More Detail: Currently the WOSM microcontroller (PIC32mx 80MHz) serves the microscope control web-pages and controls the microscope timing. To improve system latency this project will begin by moving the web control front-end to a Raspberry Pi. The student will also assist in the development of an ultra-stable laser tweezers WOSM. This will be a microscope for making recordings from single motor protein molecules (measuring piconewton forces and nanometer scale movements of single molecules).

PhD Studentship, Injury Patterns in Elite Sport & Development of Osteoarthritis, University of Nottingham, UK

Students are invited to apply for a full-time bursary available in the School of Clinical Sciences, for a 3 year PhD, open to both Home, EU and International students.

Arthritis Research UK (ARUK) have launched a five year research programme to further the understanding of the relationship between exercise, sport, injury and osteoarthritis (OA).  This world leading centre comprises 7 partners: Oxford; Leeds; Southampton; Loughborough; UCL; Bath, and the University of Nottingham.

OA is an increasing burden as our population is becoming older, more sedentary and increasingly obese. Exercise is essential for mitigating the impact of OA, and participation in sporting activities is a key target for improving the general health of the nation. However joint injury, an adverse consequence of exercise, contributes to the development of OA. A better understanding of the mechanisms linking sport, exercise, injury and OA is essential in order to develop strategies that will enable the whole community to safely and effectively exercise and participate in sport.

The injury/illness performance project (IIPP) is a longitudinal study in the area of injury and illness epidemiology (based at the University of Nottingham) in high performance sport; combining medical and exposure data collection, and forms one of the cohorts under investigation within the ARUK sport injury and OA centre.  The current PhD studentship aims to (1) examine the frequency and nature of injuries in elite athlete populations (2) compare and contrast injury history with retired elite athletes, and (3) explore the prevalence and nature of osteoarthritis in retired Olympic athlete populations.

PhD in Designing Smart Wearable Medical Devices, Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, Netherlands

The Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e) has 1 vacancy for a PhD position in China Netherlands Joint Scientific Thematic Research Project (JSTP) supported by ZonMw and NWO. Topic of research is: Smart MeDiCa – Smart Wearable Medical Devices for Monitoring Cardiovascular Health of Elderly at Home at Department of Industrial Design, Designed Intelligence Group.

Job description:
The increasingly ageing population poses challenges on long-term care for elderly. Cardiovascular disease (CVD), the major cause of death in the world, is one of the most common diseases found in the elderly. Acute cardiovascular deaths mostly occurred outside hospitals. Therefore, comprehensive home centric care solutions are in a pressing need and subsequently will have significant impact on the quality of life of the elderly people, their families and society.

The proposed ZonMw project aims for providing reliable and comfortable health monitoring for elderly at home, which will be achieved by user friendly design and multi-modal sensing integration. The PhD will work on the design of novel unobtrusive smart wearable medical systems for home monitoring of CVD-related physiological signals and parameters, such as electrocardiogram (ECG), respiration, blood pressure (BP), etc. The research will include system level design, sensor testing and integration, develop and implement schemes for improving sensing quality and system robustness, and system evaluation. Besides the technological research, comfort of users, social cultural aspects and aesthetics of the system and devices will be taken into account for the user centered design. During the PhD, iterative design process will be carried out, including design concept generation, integration of sensor technologies into the body sensor network, and design evaluation by experimental testing and performance analysis.
