Project Title: An exploration of lower limb problems in young adults

Project Description:
Musculoskeletal problems in young people are common and consume considerable health resources. To date there has been limited focus on the aetiology and natural history of these disorders. Studies have in the main focused on older people because of the societal cost of disability. However there is some evidence that musculoskeletal disorders of the lower limb in young adults may be associated with longer term problems. This PhD programme will take an epidemiological approach to investigating the prevalence of, incidence of and risk factors for lower limb problems in young adults.

PhD Position, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University, Netherlands

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, The Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences of Utrecht University is an interfaculty research institute within the faculties of Veterinary Medicine and Medicine. Research is carried out in a joint project with the National Institute for Health and the Environment (RIVM). The mission of IRAS is to provide education and research on the human health risks of exposure to potentially harmful agents in the environment, at the workplace and through the food chain.

The National Poisons Information Centre (NVIC) has a close cooperation with the RIVM, its core function is to provide advice in clinical toxicology to health professionals and rescue teams 24/7. Advice focuses on possible health effects among humans and animals, and on adequate therapies. NVIC also carries out monitoring and surveillance programs to ensure public health safety and has a 24 h emergency response function for all chemical as well as nuclear-radiological incidents.

The project will be performed by the National Poisons Information Centre (NVIC) and the Division Toxicology of IRAS.

IRAS is looking to fill the position of:

PhD researcher: Knowledge integration by PBPK modelling (1,0 fte)

Job description
Providing clinical information on the toxicity of hazardous chemicals in humans in emergency situations is not straightforward. One major obstacle is that human data on toxicity of chemicals are scarce. Data on the toxicity of chemicals are available only from animal and in vitro studies, and from accidental chemical exposure of humans.

PhD Scholarships in Organic Synthesis & Polymer Chemistry, DTU Nanotech, Denmark

Two full PhD scholarships are offered by the CBIO group at the Department of Micro and Nanotechnology (DTU Nanotech). The CBIO group has extensive collaboration with several Pharma and Medico companies in Denmark and the positions will be part of these collaborations. The positions are part of a larger effort in development of synthetic gene delivery systems at the forefront of nanomedicine research.

Position 1: Surface engineering of nanoparticles
One of the major tasks in the development of nanoparticle systems for both drug delivery and diagnostic applications is controlled surface functionalization and surface coating. We need to develop multienveloped systems where modern synthetic chemistry is a highly important tool. There is furthermore a need to develop new synthetic tools for the quantification of the biomolecular functionalization and to characterize how this is influenced by nanoparticle surface chemistry and morphology. This position is open to a student with a background in organic synthesis or polymer chemsitry.

Position 2: Biodegradable transfection systems
Current cellular transfection strategies of DNA/RNA utilize cationic lipid and polymer systems (polyplexes) that show cellular toxicity and are thus unsuitable for in vivo use. There is a need to develop new biodegradable polymer systems that are less toxic to cells. This PhD project is focused on the synthesis of new polymers for lowering the toxicity without hampering the transfection efficiency. One part of the project is focused on fluorescent labeling of the polyplexes to conduct cellular trafficking and organelle localization experiments. The successful candidate will have a background in synthetic organic chemistry or polymer chemistry.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master`s degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master`s degree in engineering.
