Robots (from now on, to include AI) will lead to short term disruption but will also pave the way to a golden future. But most other technological revolutions have shifted the balance between the skilled and semi-skilled and this is likely to happen with robots. So, whilst on aggregate there may be no problem, some will lose and others gain. Thus two research issues emerge; either:

Robots will increase inequality, but not unemployment;

or

Robots will increase inequality AND unemployment

The Goldman endowment to Newcastle University Business School was established in 2001 to commemorate the life and work of David Goldman, founder and Chief Executive of the North East’s iconic software company, the Sage Group plc. David Goldman had played a leading role in transforming the economic fortunes of the North East region.
