PhD Scholarships in Molecular Basis of Neurodegeneration, University of Tuebingen, Germany

Two Ph.D. student positions are available in the Research Group Synaptic Plasticity, at the Hertie-Institute for Clinical Brain Research, University of Tuebingen, Germany. Our group addresses the molecular and cellular basis of synaptic plasticity.

Special focus of the advertised project will be
(1) Modeling age-dependent proteotoxicity in adult Drosophila
(2) In vivo imaging of synaptic APP processing

(1) Modeling age-dependent proteotoxicity in adult Drosophila
Many diseases of aging, including Alzheimer’s disease and various forms of Parkinsonism, are associated with proteotoxicity caused by improper folding and aggregation of proteins. Recently a Drosophila “Alzheimer” model was described which allows key stages in disease progression to be studied. Specifically it facilitates analysis of processing of the Alzheimer precursor protein (APP) into the Aß peptide which has been implicated as the main instigator of disease [Greeve et. al, JNS, 2004 p 3899]. We have utilized this model to identify putative modifiers that link aging and APP induced neuronal cell death [unpublished results]. Furthermore, we want to address the effect of modifying signalling pathways involved in aging on the neurodegeneration apparent in this model. Subsequently we will assess the effects of these modifications on neurodegeneration induced by Aß alone [Iijima et. al., PNAS, 2004. p 6623], tau [Wittmann et. al., Science, 2001 p 711] and other neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s and spinocerebellar ataxia 3 (SCA3). In addition to fly genetics and husbandry, specific techniques designed to test behavioural changes, memory/learning deficiencies and retinal degeneration have been designed for use in this project. The ideal candidate is a highly motivated student with top grades, talent and creativity who is willing to visit collaborating laboratories in the course of his/her PhD.

MA and PhD in Cultural Studies at Queen’s University, Canada

M.A. and Ph.D. in Cultural Studies at Queen’s University
Kingston, Ontario

Cultural Studies at Queens (CSQ) is a unique graduate program that integrates the range of theoretical and practical approaches used within Cultural Studies, and fosters scholarship in both historical and contemporary fields of research. Drawing on a range of practices, Cultural Studies researchers investigate values, beliefs and belongings, cultural processes and cultural objects, economic and social relations, institutions and identities.

Comprising 69 distinguished faculty from 21 disciplines, CSQ offers an innovative program at the M.A. and Ph.D. levels that includes opportunities for cultural production and community and activist fieldwork. Cultural Studies at Queen`s is committed to a diversity of students and faculty, to the global expertise that they bring to the cultural, social and academic fields, and to student involvement in the shaping of the program. We are home to the graduate journal Shift, as well as a student-organized open seminar series.

The program creates an intellectual environment that combines a high level of academic scholarship and an ongoing meaningful engagement with cultural and social issues relevant to local and global communities. To this end, we have options in both the M.A. and Ph.D. that allow students to become involved in various kinds of community organizations, to participate collaboratively with cultural producers or to develop their cultural practice (e.g. filmmaking, curation, performance) or to pursue community-based projects that have clear ties to the field areas of the program. The Ph.D. has been designed around four field areas: Communication, Media and Technologies; Globalization, Nationalisms and Cultural Citizenship; Social Movements; and Bodies and Identities.

PhD Studentships in MRI Physics, University of Oxford, UK

DPhil (PhD) STUDENTSHIP – MRI Physics – University of Oxford

The Department of Clinical Neurology invites applications from Home and EU (fees only unless residency requirements are fulfilled) postgraduate students, with good degrees (first or upper second class honours degree or equivalent), for a DPhil studentship. The Department has the resources to support one student for three years in accordance with current Research Council guidelines.

The project will involve developing new integrated, semi-automated image analysis methodologies for a newly developed oxygen-inhalation functional MRI technique. The research will require the successful candidate to possess or develop a range of skills from physics and engineering, through statistics and programming to a basic understanding of neurophysiology and biochemistry.

Previous experience in advanced programming languages such as C or C++, and familiarity with environments such as Matlab would be a definite advantage.

Research activities are located at the Centre for Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Brain (FMRIB) at the John Radcliffe Hospital. Students are actively involved in a variety of programmes and seminars within the Department and more broadly with other University departments. There is a rich exposure to a wide variety of technologies, visiting speakers and the opportunity for travel to national and international meetings and workshops.

PhD Scholarships in Brain Aging and Neurodegeneration, The German Research Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE), Germany

The German Research Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) in Tübingen and the Graduate Training Centre of Neuroscience at the University of Tübingen, Germany, invite applications for 8 PhD Scholarships in Brain Aging and Neurodegeneration

Highly qualified graduate students are invited to apply for this 2-years scholarship that can be extended to a third year. The scholarships are funded by the German Helmholtz Research Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases. The research topics of the PhD projects must therefore be in line with the Center’s mission to investigate the causes and consequences of neurodegenerative diseases of the aging human brain, in particular Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, and to explore why aging is a risk factor for neurodegeneration. The research findings should eventually translate into novel diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic strategies.

Application details and a list of PhD projects proposed by faculty members of the Graduate School of Cellular & Molecular Neuroscience can be downloaded from our website www.neuroschool-tuebingen-molec.de

Application deadline is February 05, 2010. In case you have further questions, please contact Dr. Tina Lampe. Applications should be sent electronically as a single pdf-file to the Graduate Training Centre at: tlampe[at]neuroschool.uni-tuebingen.de
