PhD Scholarships, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand

For the purpose of encouraging postgraduate research, one objective being to build up strong research schools at the University, Victoria offers PhD scholarships to support doctoral studies. These scholarships are awarded on academic merit and are open to New Zealand and international students in any discipline.

Purpose of award
These Scholarships are intended to encourage doctoral study at Victoria University of Wellington.

Selection criteria
The Scholarships are open to graduates of any university within or outside of New Zealand who intend to enrol either for PhD or who have started their PhD study within one year of application.

Applicants with Victoria University ‘offers of study’ of who are current Victoria University PhD students must apply on the application form available from the link at the top of this webpage.

Please note: from 1 January 2010 there are changes to both the process for applying for PhD study at Victoria and applying for a Victoria PhD Scholarship. How these changes affect you is outlined below.

From 1 January 2010, for new PhD applicants there will be one application process for admission to the PhD programme and University and for PhD scholarships. The combined application form will be available from late 2009 on the Faculty of Graduate Research Website www.victoria.ac.nz/fgr/prospective-phds/scholarships.aspx

Please note: Although applications will be considered from students seeking scholarship support for a PhD degree for which they are already enrolled at Victoria, if you have applied for a Victoria PhD scholarship in the past, you must provide updated or additional information to apply for a second round. Such applications must be accompanied by clear support from supervisors.

The Delft-Leiden Casimir Research School (Casimir) offers an advanced European scientific atmosphere to ambitious and talented MSc and PhD students interested in academic research, which crosses the traditional boundaries between fundamental and applied research and crosses the scientific disciplines.

The school is initiated by leading physicists from the Leiden Institute of Physics (LION) at Leiden University and from the Kavli Institute of NanoScience at Delft University of Technology.

The School is named after H.B.G. Casimir (1909-2000), professor in Theoretical Physics whose involvement in fundamental as well as applied physics left many traces in the Dutch scientific landscape. He is best-known for his discovery of the so-called Casimir effect and for his visions on science and research-management.

The Chair of Systems Design, ETH Zurich, offers a position for a PhD student working in the project “On the Interplay between Social Interactions and Software Architecture in Open Source” funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF), starting as soon as possible.

This project brings together the fields of software engineering, statistical physics, and management to reap synergies between them and to advance the understanding of the complex socio-technological dynamics underlying Open Source Software, beyond the scope of one particular discipline.

The aims of this project are:

  • To establish a holistic picture of the phenomenon of Open Source
  • To understand the statistical laws governing the evolution of the software architecture, which may help developers to steer development towards favorable architectures
  • To study the self-organization of projects and the resulting social dynamics, on the level of both software users and developers
  • To analyze the link between software architecture and the project organization, as well as between the corresponding dynamics, which may enable new management principles or provide tools for smoothening the interface between software, developers, and users

Requirements:

  • MSc degree or equivalent in computer science or a related field
  • ability to develop formal models and computer simulations
  • ability to combine data analysis and modeling
  • good knowledge about graph algorithms and social network analysis is a plus

Master and PhD Scholarship Marine Science and Policy Modelling, University of Maine, USA

Master Degree
The School of Marine Sciences at the University of Maine is seeking a to enroll a student as early as May or June 2010 in the dual masters degree in marine science and policy. The student will study and work on a strongly interdisciplinary research project funded by the Coupled Natural and Human Systems program within NSF. A competitive stipend, tuition, health and student fees will be provided for three years. The project combines the work of social, biological and computer scientists and will develop agent-based learning models meant to simulate the fine scale dynamics of social and natural systems in three fisheries in the Gulf of Maine.

We seek a student with training in the social sciences and knowledge of marine biology or ecology. The student must be research oriented and enthusiastic about working and learning in a multidisciplinary team. The student will participate in a set of research tasks that will include in-depth interviews and focus groups with fishermen and the translation of conceptual models into computational models. Training in computer science will be considered a plus.

PhD
The School of Marine Sciences at the University of Maine is seeking to enroll a Ph.D. student as early as May or June 2010 with a strong masters level or applied background in computer science, ecology or the social sciences and an interest in applying those skills to an integrated social-ecological study of the Gulf of Maine fisheries. Stipend, tuition, health and other fees will be funded for three years by a grant from the NSF Coupled Natural and Human Systems program.

PhD Scholarships in Finance at Vienna Graduate School of Finance, Austria

The Vienna Graduate School of Finance (VGSF) invites excellent students to apply for the PhD Program in Finance starting in fall 2010. Up to six scholarships will be offered to the best applicants.

The program is open for students from all countries with all academic specializations, provided they hold a Master degree or equivalent and have sufficient level of formal training. The VGSF PhD program in Finance consists of two parts: rigorous coursework and work on the PhD thesis.
