Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships for Foreign Scholars and Artists, Switzerland

Each year the Swiss Confederation awards Government Excellence Scholarships to promote international exchange and research cooperation between Switzerland and over 180 other countries. Recipients are selected by the awarding body, the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS).

The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships are aimed at young researchers from abroad who have completed a master’s degree or PhD and at foreign artists holding a bachelor’s degree.

Types of scholarship

  • The research scholarship is available to post-graduate researchers in any discipline (who hold a master’s degree as a minimum) who are planning to come to Switzerland to pursue research or further studies at doctoral or post-doctoral level. Research scholarships are awarded for research or study at all Swiss cantonal universities, universities of applied sciences and the two federal institutes of technology, as well as the four research institutes. Only candidates nominated by an academic mentor at one of these higher education institutions will be considered.
  • Art scholarships are open to art students wishing to pursue an initial master’s degree in Switzerland. Art scholarships are awarded for study at any Swiss conservatory or university of the arts. This scholarship is available to students from a limited number of countries only.

The Academy of Korean Studies Fellowship Program, Korea

The Academy of Korean Studies runs the “AKS Fellowship Program for Korean Studies” in order to provide international scholars and doctoral candidates with an opportunity to carry out their research(dissertation research).

Eligibility
Foreign scholars(including those who have Korean nationality with permanent residence status in foreign countries) in the humanities and social sciences, who are currently engaged in Korea-related teaching and research activities, are eligible to apply.

  1. Senior Researcher Fellowship: Associate professor level or above/Ph. D. holder with 7 or more years of research experience
  2. Junior Researcher Fellowship: Assistant professor level or below/ Ph. D. holder with less than 7 years of research experience
  3. Pre-doctoral Fellowship: Doctoral candidates who have completed all academic requirements except for their dissertation (i.e., ABD) from institutions outside Korea. (Those who completed their Ph.D. courses at Korean schools or institutions are ineligible for pre-doctoral fellowship)

Those who have received AKS fellowship within the last 3 years(based on application submission date) are ineligible for this program.

Fellowship Period
The fellowship period should begin within year 2018 (January 1 and December 31, 2018). The applicants can apply for minimum one month to maximum one year support.

Jenny Wormald Junior Research Fellowship in Women’s History, University of Oxford, UK

University of Oxford

St Hilda’s College Oxford intends to elect a Jenny Wormald Stipendiary Junior Research Fellow, tenable for a period of three years from 1 October 2017 (or as soon as possible thereafter) to 30 September 2020 (depending on start date). Applicants should be researching the history of women’s social mobility in the UK, or as a comparative / transnational study in which the UK plays a part; or should intend to research this during the JRF. The successful candidate is likely to be at or near the postdoctoral level. The fellow must engage in original research, and may undertake a limited amount of teaching with the consent of the college.

The stipend will be £21,000 p.a. (indexed to academic salary increases). The fellow will also receive an allowance to assist with the cost of housing (£8,000 p.a.). The fellow will be provided with use of a shared office in college. Fellows are entitled to free meals, are members of the Senior Common Room, and may apply for research expenses (currently up to £1,300 p.a.). They will also be eligible to apply for small project and event grants through the college’s new research support scheme.

Pony Chung Fellowship, Research Institute of Korean Studies, Korea University

The Research Institute of Korean Studies (RIKS) at Korea University, with support from the Pony Chung Foundation, established the ‘Pony Chung Fellowship’ for Young Korean Studies Scholars. The goal of this program is to provide young international scholars in the field of Korean Studies with financial support, a suitable research infrastructure, as well as a platform in which to share ideas and research outcomes with others in the field. These components will help scholars develop their topics and expand their research, thereby contributing to the overall development and globalization of Korean Studies. Prospective participants are invited to submit an application.

  • The sphere of Korean Studies includes humanities and social sciences, as well comparative international research with a focus on Korean Studies

Max Planck Society Research Scholarships, Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law, Germany

To foster individual research projects, the Max Planck Society offers foreign researchers the possibility of obtaining a scholarship. These scholarships are typically granted for a period of between two and four months. Preference is given to those researchers whose work promotes and advances the goals of the research program and the research focuses of the Institute. Of special interest to the Department of Criminal Law are research projects concerning comparative law, European criminal law, international criminal law, economic crime, terrorism, organized crime, and information law. Of interest to the Department of Criminology are topics covering criminal sanctions, dangerous offenders, empirical research on criminal procedure, organized crime, terrorism and domestic security, victimization, social change, changes in life circumstances, crime, and crime control.

Scholarship Amounts
The Max Planck Society grants scholarships of various amounts in line with the academic qualifications of the applicant:

  • Doctoral scholarships for foreign doctoral students provide 1,365 EUR per month (as of 12/2012; subject to change),
  • Post-doctoral scholarships for foreign post-doctoral researchers provide 2,100 EUR per month (as of 12/2012; subject to change), and
  • Research scholarships for foreign professors provide 2,300 EUR per month (as of 12/2012; subject to change).

Travel expenses to and from Freiburg are not covered by the scholarship. The Max Planck Institute does not, as a rule, reimburse for travel expenses. If travel expenses are particularly high, we recommend that the applicant seek assistance from appropriate international organizations.

Application Procedure
The application period for a scholarship in the following year closes on 31 May of the previous year.

Applications received after this date can only be taken into account the year thereafter.

Research Fellowships, St John’s College, University of Cambridge, UK

Fellowship details:

  • Successful candidates will enter into their Fellowships on 1 October 2017 or such earlier date as may be agreed with the College and will vacate them on 30 September 2020 or three years after the commencement of the Fellowship if earlier. Tenure will normally be extended for a fourth year following application to the College Council.
  • The annual salary of Fellows who are not full-time students working for a degree or other qualification is at present on the scale £26,537 to £28,982, and Fellows are permitted to receive additional remuneration for up to six hours’ College or University teaching a week. Fellows who are full-time students will receive a reduced salary until completion of their courses. The salary for a Fellow who has other remunerations (other than that for up to six hours of College or University teaching) will be reduced by the total amount of this remuneration
  • Fellows may apply for grants to assist with the cost of their research, including obtaining academic material, travel expenses and the cost of extended periods of research if based outside Cambridge. Conference grants and book allowances are also available.
  • Office accommodation is provided for Fellows who do not live in College. Fellows wishing to reside with a partner/family will be eligible for a housing allowance. Fellows wishing to live in College are provided with residential accommodation with charges for services and supplies. Fellows are entitled to a maximum of 90 free lunches/dinners in each quarter of a year.

DAAD Short-term Research Grants for University Academics and Scientists, Germany

DAAD

These grants and scholarships aim to provide foreign academics and scientists working in higher education or at research institutes with an opportunity to carry out a research project at a state (public) or state-recognized higher education institution or non-university research institute in Germany.

Duration
Depending on the applicant’s work schedule, the research stay will last between one and three months. The stay may begin in May/June 2014 at the earliest.

Requirements

  • Applications for DAAD research stays are open to excellently-qualified academics and scientists who should generally hold a doctorate/PhD. All applicants must be working in higher education or at a research institute in Indonesia.
  • Besides their previous academic achievements (for example, recent publications), the most important selection criterion is a convincing and well-planned research project to be completed during the stay in Germany. This must have been coordinated and agreed with a research collaboration partner at the chosen host institute in Germany. Written confirmation of the research cooperation, including the reference to the applicant’s project, must be included with the application papers.
  • The application must provide proof of a workplace being provided at the host institute.
  • DAAD support for a research stay can only be awarded once in any three-year period.
  • Former fellows of the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation are requested to contact the Humboldt-Foundation first.

Predoctoral & Postdoctoral Fellowships, Harvard University, USA

The Academy Scholars Program identifies and supports outstanding scholars at the start of their careers whose work combines disciplinary excellence in the social sciences (including history and law) with a command of the language, history, or culture of non-Western countries or regions. Their scholarship may elucidate domestic, comparative, or transnational issues, past or present.

The Academy Scholars are a select community of individuals with resourcefulness, initiative, curiosity, and originality, whose work in non-Western cultures or regions shows promise as a foundation for exceptional careers in major universities or international institutions.

Academy Scholars are appointed for two years by the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies and are provided time, guidance, and access to Harvard University facilities. They receive substantial financial and research assistance to undertake sustained projects of research and/or acquire accessory training in their chosen fields and areas. The Senior Scholars, a distinguished group of senior Harvard University faculty members, act as mentors to the Academy Scholars to help them achieve their intellectual potential.

Terms
The competition for these awards is open only to recent PhD (or comparable professional school degree) recipients and doctoral candidates. Those still pursuing a PhD should have completed their routine training and be well along in the writing of their theses before applying to become Academy Scholars; those in possession of a PhD longer than three years are ineligible.
