PhD Studentships, Dr Giovanni d’Avossa, School of Psychology, Bangor University, UK

Applications are invited for a three-year fully funded PhD studentship in the School of Psychology, Bangor University under the supervision of Dr Giovanni d’Avossa. The studentship is available from October 1st 2010 (or as soon as possible thereafter) and includes payment of UK / EU level tuition fees, a maintenance allowance of approximately £13,590 and a research allowance of £750 per year for 3 years.

Project
The lab research interests are the central mechanisms of visual attention and spatial vision assessed with behavioral and functional imaging methods. A large registry of brain injured patients with focal lesions in cortical and subcortical structures is maintained by Prof. Rafal and Dr. d’Avossa, allowing interested applicants the opportunity to test individuals with specific visual and attentional impairments. The lab has equipment for visual testing, including a large touch screen and state of the art eye-tracker.  The lab is also well set up for the analysis of imaging data acquired on the 3T Phillips MR scanner housed in the ground floor of the building where the School of Psychology is located.

In addition to the requirements listed below, applicants should have a strong background in psychology, biology, physical sciences or engineering.

PhD Studentships, Prof Oliver Turnbull, School of Psychology, Bangor University, UK

Applications are invited for a three-year, fully funded, full-time PhD studentship in the School of Psychology, Bangor University under the supervision of Prof Oliver Turnbull. The studentship is available from October 1st 2010 (or as soon as possible thereafter) and includes payment of UK / EU level tuition fees, a maintenance allowance of approximately £13,590 and a research allowance of £750 per year for 3 years.

Project
The last half-century has produced a vast literature on episodic memory systems, and their (hippocampally-mediated) biological underpinnings. There has also been a substantial literature on other memory systems, such as semantic or procedural skills, that are independent of episodic memory. However, despite a century-long anecdotal history (beginning with Claparade), the role for emotion-based learning systems, the role of emotion-mediated memory, has been far less investigated.

The proposed study will study the (previously un-investigated) issue of how emotions are modified in the patchy and distorted recall of these amnesic patients. In particular, the study seeks to establish whether specific classes of emotion are better recalled, do specific emotions prime each other, and whether these patterns of memory error relate to pre-morbid personality.

All of these issue bear on important emotion-related questions, especially on the relationship between emotions, and how these are developed and maintained throughout the life-span. However, studying this through the lens of amnesia represents a highly novel research strategy. Moreover, the topic has substantial clinical implications – perhaps most obviously in relation to dementia.

PhD Studentships, Prof David Linden, School of Psychology, Bangor University, UK

Applications are invited for a three-year fully funded PhD studentship in the School of Psychology, Bangor University under the supervision of Prof David Linden. The studentship is available from October 1st 2010 (or as soon as possible thereafter) and includes payment of UK / EU level tuition fees, a maintenance allowance of approximately £13,590 and a research allowance of £750 per year for 3 years.

Project
The project will use functional magnetic resonance imaging and behavioural methods to study the emotion networks of the brain and the effects of neurofeedback (see Johnston et al., Neuroimage 49:1066, 2010). We will move from the basic understanding of the brain mechanisms of emotions to clinical applications. The project is based in the Bangor Imaging Unit of the School’s Wolfson Centre for Clinical and Cognitive Neuroscience, which houses a 3 Tesla fMRI system. Combinations with other techniques supported in the Centre (EEG, TMS, behavioural genetics) are also possible. We will provide all relevant training and opportunity to participate in the very active seminar and journal club programme of the Centre and the PhD programme of the Wales Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience.

For more information visit the lab website.

In addition to the requirements listed below, applicants should have a background in psychology, medicine, cognitive neuroscience, computer science/visualization, or engineering.

PhD Studentships, Prof Bob Woods, School of Psychology, Bangor University, UK

ESRC Funded 1+3 Studentship (Prof Bob Woods)
Applications are invited for a fully funded 1+3 Masters course followed by a PhD Studentship for 4 years full time study registered in the School of Psychology at Bangor University (start date 1st October 2010) under the supervision of Prof Bob Woods and co-supervision of Prof Linda Clare.

The student will undertake an ESRC recognized MSc (MSc in Psychological Research link to http://www.bangor.ac.uk/psychology/postgraduate/masters/psych_res.php?catid=&subid=7704) for 1 year prior to starting the PhD programme (3 years), and the entrance criteria will initially be for entrance onto the MSc.

The studentship includes payment of UK / EU level tuition fees, a maintenance allowance of approximately £13,590 p.a. and a research allowance of £750 p.a.

Project
The precise focus and scope of the project will be influenced by discussions between the student and the supervisory team. However, at this stage it is envisaged that the project will focus on those identified as having some degree of cognitive impairment, but not extensive enough to constitute a dementia. CFAS methodology provides a number of operational definitions that can be applied to generate samples having a given degree of impairment. The study will initially use data from the main study to identify the relationship of this impairment to indicators of health, mood and well-being, comparing this relationship across the different operational definitions.

It will then go onto to carry out qualitative interviews with participants purposively sampled to have a range of mood scores and health problems, but similar levels of cognitive impairment. These interviews will explore the relationship of health, mood and cognitive impairment. It will seek to identify the influence of multiple co-morbidities on cognitive impairment and to identify people with mild cognitive impairment that is primarily characterized by increased anxiety and worry, with a view to considering and developing possible interventions.
