A full-time postgraduate scholarship is available for a suitably qualified candidate with a good honours degree in science, agriculture or land and water science to undertake research studies leading to a Masters in Hydrogeochemistry.  The project is to investigate groundwater quality to identify the residence time and origins and mixing of the groundwaters in the South West Sydney area in relation to dryland salinity. This project is funded by the NSW Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water.

Eligibility:
Applicants should have a demonstrated strong research experience preferably with an understanding of groundwater and groundwater chemistry. A valid drivers licence for Australia is a requirement for the position given the fieldwork involved.

Amount awarded:
The scholarship is valued at $22,860 per annum (tax exempt) and may be renewed for up to two years, subject to satisfactory progress.

Harvard Postdoctoral Position in Science, Technology and Society, Harvard University, USA

The John F. Kennedy School of Government and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) at Harvard University are seeking to hire a Postdoctoral Fellow with expertise in Science, Technology and Society (STS). The one-year position will carry a teaching load of one undergraduate course in Technology and Society; the successful candidate will also assist in STS Program activities and build links between STS and SEAS. Renewal for a second year may be possible contingent on satisfactory performance.

Candidates should be qualified to carry out research on the social implications of one or more aspects of engineering or applied sciences, such as information and communication technologies, biotechnology, or nanotechnology. Areas of specialization might include studies of innovation; risk and regulation; intellectual property; new research partnerships and research governance; or ethical issues in technological R&D. Research experience on comparative, international and global issues is especially welcome.

Interdisciplinary teaching experiences are highly desirable. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in an appropriate field, including science and technology studies, sociology, law, political science, economics, or engineering.

MESPOM is an Erasmus Mundus Masters course in Environmental Sciences, Policy and Management operated by four leading European and two North American Universities and supported by the European Commission.

The MESPOM study programme is in English and lasts two years. The students study in at least three out of six consortium universities:

  • International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics at Lund University (Sweden)
  • University of Manchester (UK)
  • Central European University (Budapest)
  • University of the Aegean (Lesvos, Greece)
  • Middlebury College and its affiliate Monterey Institute for International Studies (MIIS) (USA)

Eligibility

  • a good first degree in a subject related to environmental sciences, policy and management such as biology, geography, other earth sciences, civil engineering, urban or landscape planning, resource economics or specialised disciplines (environmental engineering, environmental management, environmental economics, environmental policy);
  • candidates with other first degrees are also considered if they show commitment to environmental careers, usually through work experience;
  • MESPOM invites applications from all countries;

Master Scholarships, Optics in Science and Technology, Erasmus Mundus, Europe

MSc OpSciTech is a unique European Master`s Course providing a comprehensive and multidisciplinary coverage of the field of Optics, from upstream scientific aspects to engineering and applications in major sectors of the economy. Offered by six top-level academic partners in five countries, it receives financial support from the European Commission and is supported by major industries such as Alcatel-Lucent, Philips, Saint-Gobain, Thales, Zeiss or ASML.

Learning Objectives and outcomes
Students enrolled in the two-year programme will study in two different countries of their choice, spending one year in each and offering the opportunity to acquire 60 European Credit Transfer System units (ECTS) per year. Students are trained for technical or scientific positions in academic or industrial environment specialized in optics or using optics. PhD studies are a natural extension of the Course.

Australian Uranium Association (AUA) Indigenous Scholarship

The Australian uranium industry offers financial support for young Indigenous men and women undertaking tertiary study in areas relevant to uranium exploration and mining.

The Indigenous Leadership Scholarship Scheme is an initiative of the members of the Australian Uranium Association, who support local indigenous communities and wish to help build skills and capabilities of indigenous people in the regions where they do business.

The aim of the Indigenous Leadership Scholarship Scheme is to encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to undertake full-time undergraduate studies in Science, Engineering or Business Management at an Australian University. The Scholarship Scheme is funded by the members of the Association, and is administered by the Australian Uranium Association.

Scholarship Value and Payment
Scholarships have a value of $10,000 per annum (GST exempt) per student for the duration of the undergraduate study. Payment will be made by the Australian Uranium Association via direct Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). Payments will be made fortnightly equal to 1/26th of the annual scholarship amount.

UNESCO / Poland Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme (Science and Technology – 2010)

With a view to promoting human resource capacities in the least developed countries (LDCs) and to enhancing international understanding and friendship among nations and the people of Poland, the Polish National Commission for UNESCO and the AGH International Promotion Centre for Technology and Engineering Education (AGH IPCTEE) under the auspice of UNESCO & AGH University of Science and Technology (Krakow), are placing at the disposal of UNESCO fifteen (15) fellowships of a six months duration starting on 1 October 2010 for the benefit of Member States listed in Annex I of the announcement letter. Beneficiaries of these fellowships will be given the opportunity to undertake an individual research programme in the field of Science and Technology.

Details regarding the fellowships offered and the criteria of selection are listed below. The Polish authorities will make the final decision.

IRCSET `Embark Initiative’ Postgraduate Scholarship
Description of scheme
Second Call 2009

The Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET) `EMBARK’ Scheme offers opportunities for suitably qualified students to pursue a postgraduate degree by research. The Scheme supports basic research in the broad areas of Science, Engineering and Technology. The call for applications opens on June 9th 2009 for students and researchers hoping to begin postgraduate research in the Republic of Ireland in October 2009. While a majority of postgraduate Scholarships awarded by the Council are offered to European Union (EU) citizens or to those who are ordinarily resident within a member state of the EU, a proportion of awards are also offered to exceptional candidates who are ordinarily resident in non EU member states.

Scholarships are awarded only to those who will be full-time students and who will engage fulltime in research during the period of the award. Students awarded under the scheme must maintain their principle residence in Ireland during the term of the Scholarship and Scholarships must be held at a recognised third-level institution in Ireland.

The Scholarship awards are valued at €24,003 per year of award. Of this amount €16,002 is paid as a maintenance award to the Scholar. The remaining €8,001 is allocated to cover payment of fees to the Research Body, and support for the research to be carried out.
