University West Scholarships for International Students, Sweden

The local University West scholarship programme is open for students admitted for any of our master’s programmes. The scholarship will cover the tuition fee for the programme, fully or partly, not costs for travel, living costs or other.

The scholarships for international fee-paying students is offered as a reduction of the tuition fee.

A scholarship committee is overall responsible for the principle of the scholarships and decides every year on how to distribute the funds available between departments/faculties.

It is the departments/faculties that decides about structure (100% or 50% reduction of tuition fee or a combination of them both) and number of scholarships for every program.

It is also the department/faculty responsible for each Master’s program that decides which applicants should be awarded scholarships.

If a student is awarded a 50% reduction the tuition fee invoice sent will be reduced with the same amount.

Scholarships available
For the academic year of 2018/19 it has been decided to distribute the scholarship funds as follows:

PhD Scholarship in Experimental Physics, Umeå University, Sweden

The Department of Physics is looking for a PhD student in Ultrafast Surface Science. Application deadline is 2017-04-01.

Project description:
The experimental laser physics and materials science have been for many years very strong research fields at the Department of Physics. In 2015 a new research group was initiated that bridges the expertise in materials science and laser physics. The new group (Ultrafast Surface Science Group) develops advanced optical techniques to study ultrafast phenomena in various materials and materials systems, in particular materials for solar energy applications and novel 2D materials. The primary techniques employed are time-resolved ARPES (Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy), time-resolved two-photon photoemission spectroscopy, and optical pump-and-probe spectroscopies. The goal is to uncover complex dynamics, such as exciton multiplication, and dominant interactions in these materials. The materials studied can be prepared in-situ in the laboratory or obtained from collaborating research groups in Umeå and elsewhere.

The research group is accepting now applications to fill a PhD position. The successful student will perform experiments on interfaces of organic semiconductors and semiconductor nanocrystals. The research project will involve implementation of new experiments, preparation of samples, and the experimental work. Parts of the experimental work will be performed in collaboration with research groups in Umeå, including OPEG (The Organic Photonics and Electronics Group) at the Department of Physics, and collaborating groups abroad.
