Applications are now open for Research Training Program Scholarships.

Meritorious students are encouraged to apply, noting that, in assessing applications, ACU will give priority to applicants whose proposed research aligns with one of the following areas: education, health, social justice and the common good, and theology and philosophy. Priority will also be given to applicants wishing to study at doctoral level and Indigenous Australian applicants.

Master in Theology Scholarships, Radboud University, Netherlands

The Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies offers generous scholarships to excellent students interested in pursuing a MA in Theology. The scholarship includes full tuition and a €8,500 stipend* (enough to cover basic living expenses [housing, transport, food, books and health insurance]**). The scholarship is renewable for two more years, for three years in total, provided the student remains in good academic standing.

  • A letter of motivation
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Transcripts
  • An academic essay. The subject of the essay needs to be related to the academic discipline of theology, broadly conceived (including biblical, historical, empirical, or constructive/systematic perspectives). The essay should be between 2000-2500 words (excluding bibliography).

A Skype interview may be part of the scholarship procedure.

The Qumran Institute of the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies (University of Groningen) is delighted to present the Florentino García Martínez Research Master Scholarship for excellent students. The scholarship is specifically for students in the fields of Hebrew Bible, early Judaism and Dead Sea Scrolls.

The scholarship is € 1,000 and is meant to cover some of the expenses connected with the two-year Research Master programme at the Faculty’s Graduate School.
Awards are made on academic merit, evaluated by an academic committee. Outstanding students who wish to apply must submit:

  • a letter of motivation for enrolling in the Research Master specifically for the fields of Hebrew Bible, early Judaism or Dead Sea Scrolls
  • the list of marks for their BA
  • a writing sample (essay, thesis) from their BA
  • two letters of recommendation
  • a plan for how to spend the scholarship (e.g. tuition assistance, books, conference visit, etc.)

The Qumran Institute welcomes applications for the Florentino García Martínez Research Master Scholarship.

The deadline for submission for non-EU/EEA students is 1 March 2014 and the deadline for EU/EEA students is 15 May 2014.

Lane Doctoral Scholarships in Theology, Mater Dei Institute of Education, Ireland

The School of Theology at Mater Dei Institute of Education is pleased to announce two PhD Scholarships in Theology, to commence in October 2013. These scholarships are funded by the Mater Dei Educational and Research Trust to honour the longstanding contribution of Dr. Dermot A. Lane to Mater Dei Institute and to the field of Theology, and to mark his retirement as President of the Institute

The scholarships will be awarded through a competitive process and shortlisted candidates will be interviewed. The academic requirements for these scholarships are a good first degree (at least, Second Class Honours, Grade I, or its equivalent) in Theology or a related discipline and a Masters Degree in Theology (at least, Second Class Honours, Grade I, or its equivalent).

Each scholarship is valued at €51,000 in total. Recipients, as registered full-time research students of the Institute, will receive €17,000 per annum for three years, covering fees annually (approximately €6,300) with the remaining monies as a bursary (up to approximately €10,700 per year). This arrangement extends to both EU and non-EU students. Recipients will be required to be resident in Ireland for the duration of the scholarship and maintain an actual presence in Mater Dei Institute, with the exception of approved periods of training or research at other institutions in Ireland or elsewhere. Please note that the Lane Doctoral Scholarships are not open to existing research students, only to new applicants.

Project Title: Women in education: a case for faith schools

Project Description:
This project will examine the role, position and experience of female teachers within faith schools.

In the last twenty years, the position of woman within religion has been investigated by feminist researchers, theologians and sociologists. Franke (2001) argues that the focus of feminist researchers falls into one of several categories, these are: the development of goddess cults, new religions, women as religious leaders, feminist representations of the divine, the body, sexuality and reproduction and female empowerment within religion. Whilst the role of women within religion has been examined, this has not been extended to the role of female educators as women of faith.
