UCLA Math Undergraduate Merit Scholarship, University of California, Los Angeles, USA

The UCLA Department of mathematics Undergraduate Merit Scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman who has an exceptional background and promise in mathematics. The scholarship covers tuition, fees as well as room and board. It is anticipated that one new scholarship be awarded every year, starting in Fall 2010.

The scholarship
The award is renewable for four years, subject to the following requirements:

  • Maintain satisfactory and timely academic progress towards their degree and remain in good academic standing.
  • Maintain at least a 3.5 GPA in mathematics courses
  • Declare a mathematics major upon admission and remain in the major
  • Pass the basic exam by the end of their third year of studies
  • To continue their scholarship for the fourth year, the applicants must apply and be accepted into the Departmental Scholars Program, which leads to a simultaneous Bachelors (BS) and Masters (MA) degrees.

Scholarship recipients follow a specialized advanced program of studies, including individual study with UCLA Mathematics professors.

Master in Tourism Destination Management Scholarships, World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), through the UNWTO.Themis Foundation, is granting scholarships for the Master in Tourism Destination Management to officials from National Tourism Administrations of UNWTO Member States who wish to strengthen their skills and gain practical experience on key areas of their responsibilities.

This blended Master course (starting 10 October 2011) will provide Senior Officials from National Tourism Administrations and Tourist Destination Managers with strategic guidance and practical tools to enhance the competitive edge of destinations and prepare them for responsible growth.

This course boasts the participation of professors from Cornell, Dartmouth, George Washington University, London Metropolitan College, University of California at Berkeley and, in order to best meet the needs and tight professional schedules of participants, 3 periods will be given on campus (2 in Granada, Spain and 1 in Amman, Jordan), and 2 will be online.

To reinforce the general management and leadership skills acquired in this program, world-class 3-day executive education courses have been organized in collaboration with IESE – Harvard in Madrid and INSEAD in Abu Dhabi. Though not a requirement for receiving the master degree, these courses play an important role in preparing students for a successful career in the highest levels of management, and will be taught on-campus in Madrid and Abu-Dhabi.

Candidate Profile

  • To be a highly qualified official occupying a management post with decision-making responsibilities in the NTA of a UNWTO Member State (or, in the case of a decentralized Administration, to be a regional tourism officer, duly recommended by both the Regional Government and Central Government).
  • To have held this post in the NTA for a minimum of one year and have at least 5 years of experience in the field.
  • To have completed university education validated by a diploma (at least Bachelor’s degree).
  • To have an excellent command of English.

Undergraduate Research Scholarship, University of California, San Diego, USA

Who Can Apply: All UCSD undergraduates in any major who will be enrolled the entire 2011-2012 academic year are eligible to apply. Students who plan on graduating mid-year in 2011-2012 may also apply, provided the project and final report are completed before graduation. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents. The project must be completed while the applicant is a UCSD undergraduate. Applicants submit only one Research application, unless submitting different projects. The application will be considered for each scholarship indicated on the application form. Applications can be printed at http://faoforms.ucsd.edu/forms/0research.doc.

Project Requisite: The project must be work above and beyond the normal course of study and should not be part of Fall, Winter, or Spring 199 series coursework. However, Summer 199 series work will be accepted. The subject matter does not have to be related to the student’s major, minor, or other coursework.

Additionally, the following also applies:

  • Chancellor’s Research Scholarship will give consideration to proposals regardless of area of study. This is a one-year award up to $3,000.
  • Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. Summer Research Scholarship will give consideration to juniors or seniors in 2011-2012, majoring in biological sciences or bioengineering, who submit projects related to diabetes. This is a one-year award up to $3,000.
  • David Marc Belkin Memorial Research Scholarship will give consideration to those proposals designed to pursue special studies and projects in the general areas of environmental and ecological issues. This is a one-year award up to $3,000.
  • Biological Sciences Eureka! Scholarship promotes engagement in basic and translational biology by facilitating students’ participation in research opportunities both at the UC San Diego campus and at research facilities on the San Diego Mesa (located north of UCSD). Students must be juniors or seniors in 2011-2012 with a declared major in the Division of Biological Sciences. Successful proposals will show evidence that the scholarship will provide the students with an opportunity to have a significant research experience. This is a one-year award up to $3,500.
  • Julia Brown Research Scholarship will give consideration to juniors or seniors in the 2011-2012 academic year, whose career objectives are in the health care-medicine, medical research, pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences, or in public health. Preference given to students with extenuating circumstances or financial need. This is a one-year award up to $3,500.
  • Robert C. Dynes and Ann Parode Dynes Research Scholarship will give preference to those proposals designed to pursue special studies and projects in physics. This is a one-year award up to $3,000
  • David Jay Gambee Memorial Research Scholarship will give consideration to those proposals which involve the student as an active citizen in university governance, the local community, or national and international affairs. Also receiving preference are projects which lead to a heightened awareness of the relationship between the environment and society. Service in the community through volunteer activities or participation in programs related to the Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation are encouraged. This is a one-year award up to $3,000.
  • Frances Hellman Research Scholarship will give consideration to those proposals designed to pursue special studies and projects in physics. This is a one-year award up to $3,000.
  • Mary Louise and Charlie Robins Endowed Scholarship will give consideration to those proposals designed to pursue special studies and projects in marine sciences. This is a one-year award up to $3,000.

The Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders formerly known as Institute for Brain Aging and Dementia (iMIND) at the University of California, Irvine is internationally recognized for its research accomplishments in disorders of the brain, particularly those that are age-related. The Institute is UCI’s center for aging and dementia research, with our faculty seeking to understand the causes leading to neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, Lewy body dementia, and Huntington’s disease.

We aim to identify the life-style factors that promote wellness and “successful aging.” For those suffering from age-related memory problems, our goal is to diagnose disease, identify means for effectively treating it, and provide help to families and caregivers.

Neuroscience with a focus on cellular and molecular biology and expertise in neuroscience research, central nervous system regeneration, testing the mechanisms of integration of neural stem cells in rodent models of spinal cord injury and mechanisms controlling neuronal stem cell fate decisions in vitro and in vivo. Essential skills include experience with neural stem cells, and training in spinal cord injury techniques, including surgical and behavioral analyses
