Project Title: The psychosocial impact of ‘Honour’ Related Violence (HRV): The experience of British-Born Asians.

Project Description:
Experiences of ‘honour’ related violence (HRV) have been wholly overlooked in terms of psychological research. Significantly, not one empirically-based psychosocial source can be located to inform on the aetiology, nature, or impact of HRV, either for victims or perpetrators. Thus, this specific form of domestic and child abuse remains largely invisible in terms of systematic psychological research and no validated evidence currently exists to inform practice or policy in the UK.

The proposed project will apply psychological theories and research to explore the extent and severity of threats and violence used against and by British-born South Asian males and females residing in the UK, in the name of ‘honour’. Both qualitative and quantitative techniques of data collection will be employed.

Project Title: EU Mediterranean Partnership: how effective in promoting political and legal change in Libya, Egypt and Tunisia?

Project Description:
The EU has been a key player on the international arena due to its position as the most powerful trading bloc in the world. Increasingly, the EU uses its economic leverage to influence changes in domestic sphere of trading partners which go beyond commercial co-operation and adjustment. These stretch from the liberal reforms of the domestic markets towards greater openness and privatisation to insistence of political reforms and upholding human rights standards.

Egypt, Libya and Tunisia are EU partners under the EU Neighbourhood Policy (The Euro-Mediterranean Partnership). This project will outline and analyse the Neighbourhood polices deployed in relations with those countries, and also the indirect influence that the EU exerts ‘through trade’.

Project Description:
This project will examine the role, position and experience of female teachers within faith schools.

In the last twenty years, the position of woman within religion has been investigated by feminist researchers, theologians and sociologists. Franke (2001) argues that the focus of feminist researchers falls into one of several categories, these are: the development of goddess cults, new religions, women as religious leaders, feminist representations of the divine, the body, sexuality and reproduction and female empowerment within religion. Whilst the role of women within religion has been examined, this has not been extended to the role of female educators as women of faith.
