GREAT Scholarships, University of Essex, UK

The GREAT Scholarship programme is a joint initiative by the British Council and the UK Government, designed to attract some of the brightest postgraduates from around the world to study at UK universities.

In partnership with the British Council and the GREAT Britain Campaign, the University of Essex is proud to be able to offer ten (10) GREAT – Scholarships – University of Essex 2021-22 for applicants from Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Thailand. There is one scholarship available for each country.

This scholarship is valued at £10,000, which must be used towards the cost of tuition fees for a one-year taught Master’s (MA, MSc or LLM) degree in any discipline offered at the University of Essex.

We have up to 2 awards offering a partial fee waiver of up to £4,200 per year for a maximum of three years, primarily for overseas applicants, although Home/EU applicants will be considered. This is an excellent opportunity to join a top-class teaching and research community ranked in the top ten for research quality in the 2014 UK Research Excellence Framework.

Our Scholarship Committee will only make awards if applicants of sufficient merit come forward. We reserve the right to channel funding between our different postgraduate schemes. Successful applicants can only hold one award at a time.

Vice-Chancellor’s International Master Scholarships, University of Essex, UK

University of Essex UKIf you’re an international student from outside the EU and are funding your own studies, you could be eligible for a scholarship worth up to £5,000, which you’ll receive as a tuition fee discount in your first year.

Our Vice-Chancellor established a major fund to pay for these scholarships.

Eligibility
You must meet all of the following conditions:

  • be classified as an international student for fee purposes
  • be fully self-funding your studies
  • where a country is specified, to have completed relevant school or university studies in that country

Students who aren’t eligible
You are are not eligible for this award, even if you meet the criteria above, if you:

Women of the Future Scholarships, University of Essex, UK

University of Essex UKEssex has a proud tradition of educating amazing women. Our Women of the Future Scholarships have been created to support bright and inspirational women from across the globe. Thirty scholarships are available to equip women from around the world with the skills and knowledge needed to empower them to become leaders and drivers of change.

Each scholarship, which will be awarded on the basis of academic merit, is worth £20,000 and will be available to non-UK women for taught Masters study at Essex for 2017-18 and will cover tuition fees and a stipend.

Scholarships will be for any area of study, except two of the awards (supported by the Edge Foundation) will be allocated to students studying in our Department of Sociology.

For six of the awards (supported by Santander Universities), preference will be given to applicants from the following countries, Argentina, Brazil, Belgium, Chile, China, Colombia, Italy, France, Germany, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Qatar, Russia, Singapore, Spain, USA, UAE and Uruguay.

Eligibility
In order to be eligible for this scholarship you must:

  • be a self-funded female EU or International fee paying (fee status) applicant
  • be ordinarily resident in a country other than the United Kingdom
  • hold an offer of admission from our Graduate Admissions Office for a full time masters programme in any subject commencing in October 2017 by the closing date for the scholarship; the offer can be unconditional or conditional. Graduate Diplomas, PG Certificates and PG Diplomas are excluded from this award

University of Essex UKOur University of Essex Psychology Doctoral Scholarship supports talented PhD students to study in our Department of Psychology. Two scholarships are available in 2017-18.

If you have an excellent academic background, the potential for future achievement and financial need, you could be eligible. Once awarded, you’ll receive the scholarship for three years of your PhD (subject to satisfactory progression). The scholarship includes:

  • a fee waiver equal to the Home/EU fee (international students will need to pay the balance of their fees)
  • a stipend of £12,000 per year
  • a training bursary of £480 per year
  • Proficio funding, which can be used to ‘buy’ advanced skills training

Eligibility
You can apply for this scholarship if you have been offered a place at Essex for a full-time PhD, starting in 2017-18.

MPhil and Masters by Dissertation courses are not eligible.

University of Essex Social Sciences Doctoral Scholarships, UK

University of Essex UKWe’re a world leader in social sciences, ranked 4th in the UK for research excellence (REF 2014). Our training of the next generation of social scientists is supported by the University of Essex Social Sciences Doctoral Scholarships.

If you have an excellent academic background, the potential for future achievement you could be eligible. Once awarded, you’ll receive the scholarship for three years of your PhD (subject to satisfactory progression). The scholarship includes:

  • a fee waiver equal to the Home/EU fee (international students will need to pay the balance of their fees)
  • a doctoral stipend equivalent to the Research Councils UK National Minimum Doctoral Stipend (£14,553 in 2017-18)
  • a training bursary of £250 per year
  • Proficio funding, which can be used to ‘buy’ advanced skills training

Eligibility
You can apply for this scholarship if you have been offered a place at Essex for a full-time PhD, Integrated PhD or Professional Doctorate, starting in October 2017-18.

MPhil, Doctor of Medicine, Masters by Dissertation 1+3 Doctorates and all part-time courses are excluded.

The departments participating in the University of Essex Social Sciences Doctoral Scholarship scheme for 2017-18 are Economics, Essex Business School, Government, Language and Linguistics and Sociology.

Mathematical Sciences Winsten Doctoral Scholarship, University of Essex, UK

University of Essex UKOur Winsten Scholarship is available to students applying to study on a PhD (MPhD) course in our Department of Mathematical Sciences. One Winsten Scholarship will be offered in 2016-17.

If you have an excellent academic background and the potential for future achievement you could be eligible. Once awarded, you’ll receive the scholarship for three years of your PhD (subject to satisfactory progression). The scholarship includes:

  • a fee waiver equal to the Home/EU fee (international students will need to pay the balance of their fees)
  • Proficio funding, which can be used to ‘buy’ advanced skills training

The scholarship is named after Professor Chris Winsten, an internationally renowned mathematician who worked at Essex for more than 25 years. He applied mathematical and statistical ideas to areas of economics, leading to the eponymous Prais-Winsten transformation which is still used by modern economists today and to the groundbreaking Beckmann-McGuire-Winsten (1955) approach to transportation economics. Professor Winsten had an intuitive geometrical approach that found solutions to difficult analytic problems. He left the bulk of his fortune to further the reputation of Essex mathematics.
