Danish Government Scholarship, University of Southern Denmark

University of Southern Denmark offers the Danish Government Scholarship – supported by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science – to certain applicants in recognition of the important investment that oversea students make during their education.

The scholarship consists of two parts: full tuition fee waiver and a grant, to help cover living costs amounting to DKK 3000 per month before taxes.

Who can get the scholarship?
Candidates from a non-EU/EEA country applying for one of the following Engineering Master’s programme in Sønderborg (programme start in autumn) and be eligible to pay tuition fees:

  1. MSc in Engineering – Mechatronics
  2. MSc in Engineering – Electronics

The scholarships will be awarded to the best qualified of the eligible applicants. All eligible applicants who are offered a study place, will automatically be considered for the scholarship. No separate application is needed.

Note: The Faculty of Engineering has the possibility to award highly qualified applicants for other programmes for a scholarship as well.

The Centre for Cosmology and Particle Physics Phenomenology (CP3-Origins) at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense invites applications for one PhD position in the area of neutrino phenomenology, flavour physics and model building.

We are looking for outstanding and competitive candidates with a clear potential to excel in high-energy physics.

The Centre for Cosmology and Particle Physics Phenomenology is a centre of excellence recently established by the Danish National Research Foundation, dedicated to the understanding of the origins of bright and dark matter in the universe. The members of the centre are highly active in various research fields ranging from formal aspects of quantum field theory, strongly interacting gauge theories, electroweak symmetry breaking and Higgs physics, collider physics, neutrino phenomenology, flavour physics and related model building to astroparticle physics and cosmology. CP3-Origins offers an extremely dynamical and exciting working environment. The centre has active collaborations with leading scientists in Europe, USA, Canada, Japan and Australia.

PhD Scholarship in Political Science, University of Southern Denmark

The Department of Political Science and Public Management, University of Southern Denmark offers a PhD scholarship within the research project “University Governance” which is part of the research programme “Governance, Funding and Performance of Universities” for appointment as of August 1, 2012 or soon thereafter. The PhD scholarship must be completed within a three-year period, and the workplace will be Odense. The allocation of a PhD scholarship requires enrolment in the PhD programme in Political Science at the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences, University of Southern Denmark.

The application must include a project description of maximum five pages detailing the planned PhD project. In addition to the overall research question, it should include considerations on relevant theory and empiricism, methodological considerations as well as a work schedule for completing the project.

The project should relate to university governance, focusing on internal governance. Applications focusing on the use and consequences of different governance regimes, particularly including performance management, will be preferred. Applicants are encouraged to apply a design including both qualitative and quantitative data.

As a part of the scholarship, an individual programme must be followed, covering PhD courses, seminars, and active participation in conferences and workshops. The PhD student is expected to obtain teaching experiences and competences in other forms of communication and presentation. As a part of the PhD study programme, the PhD student is expected to make an extended visit to a research institution abroad. We also encourage PhD students to attend international conferences and summer schools. It is likewise expected that the student participates in the department’s various activities and spends regular hours at the department.

PhD Scholarship in General Biology, University of Southern Denmark

The Institute of Biology wants to strengthen education and research into general biology and is now offering a number of PhD scholarships with enrolment this year.

Description
The research at the Institute of Biology is divided into four research areas and the scholarships are offered within these areas:

  1. Sound and behaviour
  2. Environmental stress
  3. Ecology
  4. NordCEE, including marine biogeochemistry

The scholarships are available to students who wish to obtain a PhD either with or without a preceding Master’s degree, and who have an agreement on a PhD project with a supervisor employed at the Institute of Biology.

It is a precondition that the supervisor can cover at least 1/3 of the salary and taximeter which is currently DKK 80,000.00 a year plus additional operational costs.

In addition to the documentation mentioned below, an application has to contain a description of the project which explains the connection to the Institute of Biology, a budget (salary and costs), and documentation of financing (including operational costs).

PhD Fellowship in Fuel Cell Catalysts, University of Southern Denmark

A PhD fellowship in connection to the Danish project “CATBOOSTER, PEMFC catalysts for boosted activity and enhanced durability” is available for a period of three years from September 1, 2011 at Institute of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Environmental Technology at University of Southern Denmark.

The Ph.D. fellow will work in an interdisciplinary research project financed through the Danish ForskEL program with participation of other Danish research institutions and companies.

The project aim to develop a new generation of electrocatalysts for low and high temperature polymer membrane fuel cells (LT and HT PEMFCs). The project also aims at development of improved catalyst supports based on nano carbon tubes or ceramics.

The PhD. fellowship candidate should have a background as master of science or engineering in chemistry or physics with a specialization within materials or similar. An applicant who is experienced within development and characterization of fuel cell materials will be preferred.

The successful applicant will be enrolled as a PhD student at the PhD School at the Faculty of Engineering within the Research Training Programme of Functional Materials and Nanotechnology and he/she will be located at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense.

Appointment as a PhD Research Fellow is for three years (5+3 programme). Employment stops automatically at the end of the period. The holder of the Fellowship is not allowed to have other paid employment during the period.

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement of 1 October 2008 on salaried PhD scholars between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).

The Research Unit of Health Economics at The University of Southern Denmark is advertising a PhD scholarship within the area of Behavioural Economics. The PhD project should involve research on citizens’ health choices and preferences for health.

Requirements
The successful applicant for a PhD scholarship must have demonstrated a research potential as reflected by the grades obtained and the quality of the master thesis. Applicants are expected to have an educational background in economics or a related subject corresponding to the Danish degrees cand.oecon., cand.polit., cand.scient.oecon. or cand.merc.

The application must include a synopsis (maximum 5 pages) describing a research proposal related to the topic area of the scholarship. Dialogue with one of the contact persons below is possible. The proposal may be further elaborated upon during the first three months of the scholarship.

The successful applicant will have the Research Unit of Health Economics in Odense as place of employment and will be expected to participate actively in departmental activities Non-Danes are expected to acquire a basic knowledge of the Danish language, in particular reading skills, during the first year of the scholarship.

Compensation
Employment as a Salaried PhD Research Fellow is governed by the agreement of October 1st, 2008 on Graduate Employees in government, appendix 5 – protocol on PhD Research Fellows. Annual starting salary level for new graduates is app. DKK 300,000 plus pension scheme.

Job description:
PhD fellowship: The role of post-translational protein modifications in epigenetic regulation

The PhD fellow will join our efforts to elucidate the mechanisms of protein regulation by detailed analysis of transient post-translational modifications by mass spectrometry. Specifically, we aim to gain a detailed understanding of the role of co-existing post-translational modifications in proteins. The PhD fellow will develop quantitative mass spectrometry based techniques to study histone proteins and other types of chromatin binding proteins and their post-translational modifications in the context of stem cell and cancer cell biology.

The fellowship is part of the activities of the Centre for Epigenetics financed by the Danish National Research Foundation.

The qualified applicant holds a Master’s Degree in Biochemistry and/or Molecular Biology and has a strong background in protein biochemistry and/or cell biology, and documented experience in analytical biochemistry, mass spectrometry and bioinformatics. The PhD fellow will interact with collaborators at other institutions and is expected to be able to communicate fluently in spoken and written English.

PhD Scholarship in Protein Kinases with Respect to their Regulatory Mechanisms in Diseases

Job description:
A three-year scholarship is available at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Southern Denmark. The PhD position is available from 1 March 2011.

Outstanding candidates with demonstrated practical work experience with these protein kinases at the biochemical and cellular level are invited to apply. The project is devoted to cloning, expression, purification and characterization of protein kinases in vitro and in vivo in order to explore their regulatory mechanisms. The candidates should also have a proven knowledge in cell biology techniques with focus on cellular signalling and protein phosphorylation.

PhD fellowship in vision based segmentation and quantification of the temporal-spatial development of textured structures

The Institute of Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology and Environmental Technology (KBM), Faculty of Engineering, University of Southern Denmark is seeking a highly motivated graduate to undertake research in vision based segmentation and temporal quantification in the spatial development of textured structures. The position is in close cooperation with the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller institute (MMMI). The Ph.D. position is part of two larger projects: ? funding – GUDP (Grønt- Udviklings- og DemonstrationsProgram) project with the title: “Graduation of fungicides and herbicides in potatoes and cereals”; and ? funded by Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller institute (MMMI) via a project titled “DiagnoseBot – Increasing the effectiveness of wound treatment and operations” (DiagnoseBot – Effectivisering af sårbehandling og operationer). Both projects will initially share active 3D vision systems for image acquisition of crop/weed scenes and human wounds. The PhD student will collaborate closely with the Cognitive Vision Lab (CoViL) research group at SDU which already has a powerful GPU accelerated framework for creating a vision system based on multiple view geometry referred to as Cognitive Vision Library (CoViS).

The focus will be on

  • Robust segmentation based on 2D and 3D vision (using the CoVIS framework)
  • Extraction of features for classification
  • Robust quantification of the early development of textured structures
  • Real-time implementation

Applicants for the PhD scholarship must have a masters degree within the subjects applied computer science, machine vision and/or statistics. The applicants must have experience with:

  • Sensor technology
  • Image analysis within the domain of crop/weed
  • Feature extraction
  • Embedded software and hardware design
  • Acceleration of signal processing algorithms, using Graphical Processing Units (GPU)
