PhD Studentship, Warwick Medical School, University of Warwick, UK

PhD Studentship, Warwick Medical School, Biomedical Cell Biology
Supporting Partner: Warwick Private Hospitals Charitable Trust

This is an outstanding opportunity for a practically-minded Physicist, Engineer or Biologist with an interest in modern digital optical microscopy to pursue a PhD qualification in optical microscope control engineering. As part of a wider programme in digital optical microscopy, we are currently developing the Warwick Open Source Microscope (WOSM, http://wosmic.org). The WOSM uses a compact optical design that is exceptionally physically stable, opening up new opportunities for ultra high resolution optical microscopy. The most innovative aspect of the WOSM is its control scheme.

The entire microscope is controlled from a web browser via a local microcontroller, allowing remote operation and allowing several microscopes to be controlled from a single web browser. The immediate opportunity is for a student to take on the work of implementing Rasberry Pi integration.

The WOSM project website will serve software, data and community-based support for both hardware and software. There are opportunities in implementing this, also.

More Detail: Currently the WOSM microcontroller (PIC32mx 80MHz) serves the microscope control web-pages and controls the microscope timing. To improve system latency this project will begin by moving the web control front-end to a Raspberry Pi. The student will also assist in the development of an ultra-stable laser tweezers WOSM. This will be a microscope for making recordings from single motor protein molecules (measuring piconewton forces and nanometer scale movements of single molecules).

Fully-Funded PhD Fellowship, University of Warwick, UK

For 2013–16 the Department is offering one fully-funded PhD fellowship to an outstanding EU or overseas applicant. The fellowship covers all academic/tuition fees, whether for an EU or overseas student. In addition, the successful applicant will receive a maintenance grant of around £13,600 (currently US $21,900) per year for three years. The doctoral fellow will be expected to contribute to Departmental teaching and other activities up to a maximum of 6 hours per week during term time as part of the conditions of the award. There is no separate application procedure for this competition. All applications received by 5 June 2013 will be considered. Decisions are expected in the week of 17 June.

Warwick’s Italian Department is an unusually collegial unit with a vibrant research culture. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (2008) it was ranked third nationally (second, on more specific measures). It has an enviable record of attracting research funding and has a distinctly interdisciplinary approach, linking literature very strongly with historical contexts, theory, visual culture, migration and travel writing, and cultural and intellectual history. Its seven members of academic staff are able to supervise in most areas of Italian Studies, from Dante and the Renaissance to contemporary literature and culture. The library’s holdings are strong and can easily be supplemented by the libraries of Oxford and London, which are reachable within an hour by train.

For further details see:

Currently Warwick’s Italian Department has a community of around fourteen PhD students, making it one of the largest programmes in the country. Together with other departments in the Sub-Faculty of Modern Languages (French Studies, German Studies, Hispanic Studies) it offers intensive training programmes in teaching and research for PhD students. Italian also has a considerable and growing number of postdoctoral research fellows and strong interdepartmental and international links, from Italy, Germany and the Netherlands to North America and Australia.

Master Scholarships in Complex Systems Science, Erasmus Mundus, Europe

University of Warwick, Ecole Polytechnique (Paris), Chalmers University and University of Gothenburg are pleased to announce a new joint Masters Programme in Complex Systems Science

A “complex system” comprises many interacting components leading to multiple levels of collective structure and organization. Examples include natural systems ranging from bio-molecules and living cells to human social systems and the ecosphere, as well as sophisticated artificial systems such as the Internet, power grid or any large-scale distributed software system. It is a key challenge for our society to better understand, adapt, design and control such systems.

Our Masters degree teaches the tools to analyse complex systems and to understand their emergent behaviour. Students are offered a variety of research project opportunities to develop experience applying this to fresh challenges from the real world and within academic research.

We offer an exceptional cross-disciplinary environment and experience, with the programme based around three leading research centres in Complex Systems, associated with the Universities of Warwick (UK), Ecole Polytechnique (de Paris, France), and Chalmers/Gothenburg (Sweden). The European Complex Systems Society is an associated partner

The programme runs over two years (120 ECTS); it is half taught and half by research and leads to a JOINT (or double) Masters degree of University of Warwick, Ecole Polytechnique, Chalmers University (Gothenburg) and the University of Gothenburg. Students will be required to spend extended time in at least two centres and to join in events/collaborations across all three. Admissions are centralised (students must apply through Warwick, the coordinating node) and successful candidates will start in September at the Centre whose initial teaching provides the best bridge between their undergraduate background and the programme as a whole. All students will have mobility opportunities after six months, and earlier for some well prepared students.

Erasmus Mundus Scholarships – MA in International Performance Research (MAIPR)

The Erasmus Mundus MA in International Performance Research (MAIPR) is aimed at students with a particular interest and/or background in the performing arts, therefore those who may wish to pursue a career in or add value to already existing skills in aspects of arts practice or pursue an academic career through advanced study, perhaps leading to a Ph.D.

The current MAIPR intakes are truly international, made up of students from all continents (except Antartica!) We have students who have entered straight after finishing their undergraduate degrees in performance-related disciplines and others who have worked as directors, choreographers, curators, dancers and actors. You should bear in mind, however, that MAIPR is not a practical training programme. What it will do is help you develop and enhance your theoretical knowledge about performance-related issues, and it will certainly add value to your already existing skills base.

Funded by the European Commission, the MAIPR from autumn 2011 will be offered by four internationally renowned academic institutions: the University of Warwick in the UK; the Universiteit van Amsterdam (the University of Amsterdam) in The Netherlands; the Univerzitet Umetnosti u Beogradu (University of Arts Belgrade) in Serbia; and the Helsingin Yliopisto (the University of Helsinki) in Finland.

Students successfully completing the programme will receive a double degree awarded by the Universities of Warwick, Amsterdam or Arts Belgrade.
