Lotus, Erasmus Mundus Scholarships for South-East Asian Students to Europe

Lotus is an Erasmus Mundus Action Two Partnership (EMA2) of European and South-East Asian Higher Education Institutions (HEI) and Associations aiming at fostering mutual enrichment and better understanding between the EU and South-East Asia (China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand), through the exchange of persons, knowledge and skills at higher education level and to co-operate in the following program activities:

  • Mobility of undergraduate and graduate students
  • Mobility of PhD students
  • Post-doc mobility
  • Academic and administrative staff mobility

The types of mobility to be funded are:

  • For students: undergraduate, master, doctorate and post-doctorate mobility opportunities
  • For academic staff: exchanges for the purposes of teaching, practical training and research

This project is to give South-East Asian students and staff the possibility to go to a European University to improve, enrich, learn, experience, …. their own knowledge and skills. Please bear in mind that the scholarships are only granted to South-East Asian students and staff coming to Europe.

To enable students to benefit in a linguistic, cultural and educational way from the experience of pursuing academic studies in another country, all students should have a thorough command of English (this can only be proven by means of internationally recognized documents, p.e. IELTS certificate, TOEFL, First Certificate of Cambridge, an English diploma, a Degree obtained in English). Please note, however, that this also depends on the language requirements of the host universities within the Lotus project.

Erasmus Mundus Master Scholarship in Evolutionary Biology, Europe USA

The European Commission will grant a number of scholarships to highly qualified students to participate in the MEME programme. The selection procedure for these scholarships will be carried out by the Admission and Examination Committee of the MEME programme. Each year, a maximum of 18 scholarships will be awarded to participating students; for instance in 2011 there were 9 scholarships for category A students and 8 scholarships for category B students. Because of an EU initiative named “Western Balkans and Turkey Window”, we were able to award one additional scholarships to students from the following countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Kosovo, Croatia and Turkey. This scholarship was awarded as a category A scholarships.

Scholarships for both categories of students will cover all participation costs for the MEME programme, including tuition fee, insurance, language courses and summer schools. In addition, scholarships include the following:

  • Category A scholarships: A monthly allowance of € 1,000 and a yearly contribution to travel and installation costs of € 4,000.
  • Category B scholarships: A monthly allowance of € 500 and a yearly contribution to travel and installation costs of € 1,500.

The EU requires that we maintain a geographical balance of admitted students that receive a scholarship: no more than two students from a single country may receive a scholarship for the MEME programme.

PhD in Experimental Nuclear Physics, Uppsala University, Sweden

Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application: PhD position in experimental nuclear physics at the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Starting date: spring 2012.

Research area: applied nuclear physics

Project: The nuclear reactions group http://www.physics.uu.se/tk/en/content/nuclear-reaction-research-group is looking for a PhD student within the research field of nuclear data, especially neutron-induced nuclear reactions. The group is part of the division of applied nuclear physics at the Department of Physics and Astronomy. We are currently constructing a neutron source for the IGISOL facility at the University of Jyväskylä, for precision measurements of fission yields.

The PhD student will participate in planning and performing measurement campaigns at IGISOL. The neutron source will be installed during 2012. It will then be used for precision measurements of the isotopic yields from neutron-induced fission for various actinides with IGISOL and JYFLTRAP. The measured data will be used for improving model codes for the nuclear fission process.

The work will be conducted from Sweden with multiple travels to Finland. The candidate will be involved in practical work in the laboratory, perform data analysis and computer simulations, and participate in model development.

We are searching for an excellent, highly motivated candidate with good knowledge of nuclear physics. The candidate should have a keen interest in the development of innovative experimental methods and data analysis tools.
