This will be the first year that we will offer the Oxford – Oxitec Graduate Scholarship in Zoology, which has been made possible by funding from the University and Oxitec, a spinout company of the University that works to develop better ways to control insect pests that spread diseases and damage crops.

This scholarship is open to applicants of any nationality and covers university fees, college fees and a grant for living costs of at least £14,296.

Applications are made online using the standard University application form available from 1st September 2016. All applications to the DPhil in Zoology will be automatically considered for this scholarship.

The closing date is 20th January 2017.

Oxford-NaturalMotion Graduate Scholarship, University of Oxford, UK

University of Oxford, UKThis year we are able to offer two Oxford NaturalMotion Graduate Scholarships in Zoology, which has been made possible by funding from the University and through the success of one of the Department of Zoology’s previous graduate students, Torsten Reil, who founded NaturalMotion Ltd. NaturalMotion Ltd develops computational methods for animating movement, as used in Hollywood films and computer games. Preference will be given to projects which involve the application of computational methods to biological questions.

One of these scholarships will be tenable at Christ Church and named the Oxford-Christ Church-NaturalMotion Graduate Scholarship. All eligible applicants will be considered for this scholarship, regardless of which college (if any) you state as your preference on the graduate application form. However, successful applicants will be transferred to Christ Church in order to take up the scholarship.

These scholarships are open to applicants of any nationality and cover university fees, college fees and a grant for living costs of at least £14,296.

Oxford-Mary Frances & Philip Wagley Graduate Scholarship, University of Oxford, UK

University of Oxford, UKThe Oxford Graduate Scholarships have been established through a groundbreaking new matched funding initiative to enable the creation of fully-funded scholarships for graduate students of the highest calibre from across the world. 2013-14 saw the very first Oxford Graduate Scholars begin their studies.

Scholarships are awarded to applicants who have demonstrated excellent academic ability, who will contribute to the University’s groundbreaking research, and who will go on to contribute to the world as leaders in their field, pushing the frontiers of knowledge. The University contributes 40% of the funds for these scholarships, together with 60% from generous donations provided by numerous supporters of the University and its colleges.

Dr Mary Frances Wagley was amongst the small number of women to be admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the 1940s and after her undergraduate studies she came to St Hilda’s to complete a DPhil in Physical Chemistry (1947-1950). Dr Wagley had a long career as an educator in the USA, teaching chemistry at Smith College from 1950 to 1953 and later serving as headmistress at St. Paul’s School for Girls in Brooklandville, Maryland, from 1966 to 1978. A pioneer in many respects, in 1970, she became the first woman to join the MIT Corporation, and in 1984-’85 she served as the first female president of the MIT Alumni Association. Dr Mary Frances Wagley is an Honorary Fellow of St Hilda’s College and has generously endowed a graduate scholarship in the sciences to continue her lifelong commitment to opening educational opportunities to talented students.

The scholarship will cover 100% of University and college fees and a grant for living costs (of at least £13,863). Awards are made for the full duration of your fee liability for the agreed course.

rare Scholarship in Graduate Research, Canada

The rare Charitable Research Reserve is a 913-acre property in Cambridge and North Dumfries, Ontario at the confluence of the Grand and the Speed Rivers. The goal of rare is to protect this environmentally sensitive landscape intact, in perpetuity, and to promote the use of the property for education and research. The property includes a broad range of habitats including riparian zones, upland and lowland deciduous forest (old-growth and second-growth), savanna, cliffs, coldwater streams, deciduous swamps, marshes, hedgerows, agricultural fields and old fields.

The rare Scholarship in Graduate Research is valued at $4,000 and is open to all Canadian and International graduate students who will conduct research on rare property between May 2011 and April 2012. The field of study is open and could include, but is not limited to, research in ecology, zoology, geology, restoration ecology, hydrology, botany, soil science, archaeology, agriculture and education. The Scholarship will allow students to study in a relatively undisturbed, yet highly accessible site. The monetary award will help ensure successful candidates have the necessary resources to conduct and report on their research at rare. It will also allow the student to give an oral presentation at a conference in their discipline.
